I love this store because there's tons of stuff you can listen to. They have lots of different types of genre for everybody. I especially love how you can scan a cd and listen to it just like that! I've never seen any other music store do that. The place to great when you have nothing to do.

The master who minds the shop here is an amazing flute player. Let him show you a few things next time you visit. Located in Chinatown, Clarion's got an array of world instruments here, but mostly they specialize in Chinese instruments. The gong selection is insane, beautiful bamboo flutes, pipas, ruans, erhus... They give lessons on a lot of these instruments in the basement, host concerts. On top of selling quality, hard to find instruments, this place is a real resource to connect with the Bay Area music scene.

More
Street Light Records is a small music store that buys and sells used CDs, DVDs, and videos. They have a pretty good selection of rare CDs and such, all at low prices. They sell used music from all the genres, and they have quite a selection of underground stuff. Don't expect a lot of money for your used CDs though. Usually they don't pay more than a few bucks credit, but it's better than other stores.

Meng Trading Co. is located in Chinatown, I prefer this store over other Asian movie/music store because they have a lot to choose from. They are also very updated with the newest movies and CDs from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea. Price is not so bad considering that they are selling authentic copies instead of bootleg ones like some other stores. I would suggest going here if you want to buy some Asian CDs.

Borders has the biggest collection of movies, music, books under one roof. I buy all my needs either here or at amazon. the reason for purchasing here is that if you are a member, you get discount coupons making purchases here much more cheaper. They also have a cafe which means you can enjoy a good book with your favorite drink and spend hot summers here. they have a good collection of books and DVDS

More
Bird & Beckett is an independent, neighborhood book and record shop. I'm assuming this business is struggling to survive, or they wouldn't be asking for donations (sign on their front window). The much-loved video store on the same block just went under and hopefully this place isn't headed to the same fate. When you see a community-centric shop like this, there's no question how lousy the big chain books stores are. All the reason more to peruse through their selection of records (killer jazz section) and new and used books. Every time I walk past, I can't help let the eclectic magazine rack they have on the sidewalk pull me in. Once I'm perusing the shelves there's always something must-have. A hard to find book, some crazy record for only a few bucks. And they host a regular series of music. Good stuff.

More
This music shop, which has been a Bay Area staple for years, is a great shop for independent artists and obscure records. The Union Square location boasts posters of Bay Area music stars like Mac Dre and Green Day. When you first walk in, be prepared to be hounded by the security guard to leave your baggage at the front. Loud music may be playing, anything from rap to wild punk rock. Posters align the walls going upstairs of the Bauhaus, Joy Division, and other modern rock heroes. Used CDs and DVDs sell for very cheap here, you can stock up on anything if you take the time to look. The Union Square location boasts a lot of tourists, so be prepared for lines and crowds. This is a also a great place to sell your album if you are a local artist trying to make it big!

Open Mind music on Divisadero may not have the selection that Amoeba does, but they have a wonderful hand picked selection and an incredibly knowledgeable staff. Plus there is always an open listening station and you can listen to almost every record before you buy it. As far as I am concerned they have all the bests of every genre from down-tempo electronic to classic rock. I can spend hours in there talking with the employees and listening to records, and I never am able to walk out empty handed.
