I've been a fan of the Beats since high school. I've read most of Jack Kerouac's books as well as some of the other Beats. He is my favorite all time author. When I was in San Francisco recently I had to go to North Beach and visit the Beat Museum.
I thought I knew a lot about the Beats, but I was amazed to learn so much more from looking at the exhibits. A very nice man who worked there spent some time with me explaining the history and he was happy to answer my questions. Most of the time you walk into a place and get ignored, but here I felt welcome.
They have a movie room in the back with theater chairs that were really comfy and I spent some time watching a documentary called The Source. I couldn't stay to watch the whole movie, but it was so good that I purchased the movie from their gift store. They have a great selection of dvds and I purchased one called Beat Angel that was recommended and had a money back guarantee. After I got home I watched it and it was very good.
The shop also has some other cool stuff besides books, like posters. Lots of 60's in the shop as well as some neat t-shirts.
They also have an interesting spiritual section, which I was surprised to see, but the Beats were very spiritual. Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and Michael McClure were and are very much into Buddhism.
I was told that they are expanding the museum and shop into the upstairs. There is a regular schedule of events like a poetry showcase and the beat walking tours will be starting soon. I wish I could have gone on the walking tour. I'll save it for my next visit.
There is a $5 admission to the museum, but it is worth it and I want to support keeping alive the spirit and history of the Beats. This is a very different and unique museum. Don't miss it!
Pros: Easy to find location
Cons: Parking can be difficult in North Beach

I highly recommend the public tour. Last Sunday, my family and I visited the Museum and had a great time participating in the public tour. The tour guide was excellent at facilitating a dialogue among the group, and she really helped us think about all of the different exhibition themes and issues. The show itself is fascinating, because it offers alternative views of Jewish communities throughout the country. I was especially taken with the portraits of teens by Dawoud Bey. The photographs are accompanied by audio recordings of the teens discussing their own identity. It was moving to hear the teens' actual voices while looking at their portrait.

If you are hoping to start an art collection and/or add to one, but hate the atmosphere of most galleries, check out Hang Art. They have fantastic, affordable art, and the gallery atmosphere is casual and friendly. Plus it's a huge space, so there are always lots of pieces from which to choose. It's a great gallery!

I'm not one to write reviews but I wanted to let people know about my experience at Walter Adams Framers in the inner-sunset. I came in a few months ago with an old photograph of my mother from the 1950's, it was faded and stuck to some old cardboard. The young man who helped me was very courteous and patient and carefully removed the photo from the cardboard and asked what I had in mind for framing, I said I mainly wanted to preserve it, so he suggested a very simple frame with a double mat to accent the color in the photo, and he also took the time to explain that the materials they use were would preserve the piece forever. They said it would take two weeks to finish and that seemed like a long time for me, but once again he explained that they had four stores and that was the standard turnaround time to ensure quality for each job.
When I got the call that it was ready, I went in and he unwrapped the piece and I was blown away by the quality of the framing. The whole thing, the mats, the frame were cut perfectly, and it is also preserved with uv glass, which is all that they use.
I suggest anyone wanting to frame something with care and quality to visit one of their stores.

More
I visited the M H De Young during the grand re-opening weekend event they had last year, and it was really great. Really, what's better than wandering through a museum at 3 AM with a dj spinning on the ground floor?
I much enjoyed all of the exhibits at the De Young, which include early American paintings and furniture as well as sculptures and carvings from South America, Africa, and indigenous cultures thorughout the world. I also enjoyed looking at the beautiful display of vintage ball gowns, photography from the depression era, and some of the modern art on display.
Each exhibit is displayed in the spacious rooms of the new building, which really is art in itself.
The gift shop is also really nice, with 2 floors of books, gadgets, toys, art pieces, jewelery, and household items.
The food at the De Young cafe is a nice fusion of California style and comfort food, and I highly approve of their salads and mac & cheese.

This gallery is located in a difficult location in SF. Although I've never been to the gallery, I've been in contact with them numerous times. Each contact I've had great service and they've been able to answer my questions. I bought some items and they were shipped quickly and well packaged.
Check out their website www.whitewallssf.com if you have any questions or want to check out their art. They answer questions via email rather quickly.

Wyland Gallery is located at Pier 39. It is the type of place that I like to walk through but do not every buy. They have tons of Wyland's art from paintings to sculptures both glass and other materials. Wyland's art is mostly sea life and is done is a way that it looks like a cross between photography and fantasy painting. They carry some less expensive items and souvenirs but most art is out of reach for the average person as with most galleries. The art is beautiful.

I visited the Chinese Historical Society because I was in the area. When I went in there, it was really empty. It was also kind of eerie. The place was dingy and dusty, and it seemed like nobody goes there much. The person behind the counter did not even notice that I had gone in. When I went inside, I saw a couple of exhibits, nothing too interesting. I was out of there in less than ten minutes.
