Editorial Review
Joanna Currier, February 13, 2008
Modern, spare decor and interesting combinations of sushi and Latin cuisine in Glen Park.
The Scene
A barren, pebble-beige decor is reminiscent of futuristic interiors from sci-fi movies, though the chiseled lines are somehow made smooth and appealing. The geometry is one of arcs and rectangles: A curved sushi bar offers chairs for roughly eight, and tables hold about 30 in the small room. Chairs are boxy, as though repurposed from elementary school. Speckled marble tops the tables. Walls are mostly bare but for a sculptural metal installation that cascades down a back wall.
The Food
The stark look of the room brings texture into high relief--of the materials in the space and, especially, of the food. Preparations are very sensuous: The mouthfeel of each bite can range from delicately crisp to pure velvet, with nice appreciation for complementary flavors and temperatures. The small menu includes Japanese and Latin-inflected share plates--lightly fried calamari doused in cornmeal and togarashi, and a lively, smokey salad of colorful grilled vegetables. A filet comes with an unusual, sweet, tempuraed hash of corn and jalapeno. Sushi rolls are complex, unique and garnished with sophistication and an eye towards subtlety.
Hits: Entrees and small plates are surprisingly flavorful and worth straying from the sushi menu.
Misses: Though friendly, service can be adrift and inconsistent. Also, wine is served in too-small stemless glasses.
