the sushi here is probably one of the best in SF for this price. Great atmosphere but it's in a very small place. Definitely worth checking out!

Not sure what the buzz is about. I am a food professional and eat in amazing sushi spots across the US and beyond (Tsukiji market is fish heaven) Sushi Bistro is comfortable and likeable but the fish was not. HUGE portions of poor quality sashimi is not what good sushi should be. The tuna was dyed. The rolls on the menu read well but the execution was not there...soggy and not balanced. Too bad because we wanted to really like SB. Prices are good and the service was friendly but that does not matter if the fish is not good....there is so much better bait in SF.

Pros: quality, portion
Cons: some rolls have too much going on

This is my favorite sushi place in SF. It can be hard to get a table some nights, but it is always worth it. My favorite is the Spicy Girl Tuna appetizer made with white tuna and macadamia sauce. The "spring" lettuce wrap is another fav. The fish has always been super fresh and perfectly prepared in my experience.
Pros: unique delicious sushi in a simple atmosphere
Cons: hard to park in the neighborhood

I do not agree with the good reviews here. We went there based on very good reviews here and on some other sites. We ordered 10 Nigiris each (combo), and one time 6 nigiries and 8 Californian rolls to be shared.
The rolls were good, wherever they were not like any other Californian Rolls we've eaten anywhere else. No nori. They were made of rice and sesame, with crab in the middle.
The Nigiris were awful. Steaks of fish over some grains of rice. The pieces of fish were far too big. An important component of good nigiris is rice. The rice here was not very tasty and almost absent.
About the fish... It seemed full of water. Like if it had been
inflated with water. It was fresh, but not tasty, and it was even farinaceous. A weird texture I never experienced eating sushis around the world. Maybe having big pieces of GOOD fish would have been great, but in that condition, I didn't enjoyed it at all.
Service was ok. We were sit at the bar. The sushis men were working very hard. The place was crowded.
Pros: Price
Cons: Fish quality and taste

Went to San Francisco for vacation in February 2008. My husband and I did our research to find a great sushi place, and decided on Sushi Bistro. We loved it so much that we went back two nights later, when we had all of San Francisco's fine eatieries to choose from! We dreamt of "Hot Love" after our first experience, an appetizer that is a MUST TRY! We have eaten sushi in AZ, other parts of CA, FL, NC, Brazil, Hawaii, and Sushi Bistro ranks up there among the best for us!
Pros: staff is friendly and efficient, fish is fresh, rolls are creative
Cons: PARKING!!!

Their sashimi is so far the best on my list. It is fresh that requires not biting... it melts inisde your mouth, and thats what I called "real" japanese sushi/ sashimi. Prompt seating? They tried... but its a little unfair... they give the best seats to the Caucasians... if you are one, then congradulations. The Sushi chef was amazing... sitting in front of the sushi bar can make conversation with this young, talented, tall, patienced, taiwanese guy. Come here for the sushi, don't go for regular japanese food.
Pros: Fresh Sashimi, Cozy environment
Cons: Unfair services

On 09.15.07 Saturday evening we walked in and were told it will be 45 minutes. After 40 minutes walked in to check again, we were told that he was sitting reservations first and did not know how long it would be. My wife and I had our cousin and 7 year old nephew out of town who's nuts about sushi. We were looking forward to this meal all day and had bitter sushi at the end.
Next time I would walk in, ask for phone number, call, make reservation in front of them and come back at the time I specified - it should be more reliable according to their rules. But I am never going back, probably better for both - them and us - we were to celebrate boy's early birthday, since we won't be there for the actual.
I can't believe I am still bitter about it... usually I am not... sorry. I would not have said anything if it wasn't for my nephew.
Pros: Ambience,
Cons: Service, parking, long wait

I LOVE this place! The fish is consistently fresh and delicious. Picking the next roll to order is always difficult, as all choices are great, but the Spicy Crunchy is my No. 1. Can you say Macadamia nut crust!!! I thought you could! I appreciate that this is not your typical sushi joint, after all it's got "bistro" in its name for pete's sake and reggae on its soundsystem. But I like that it's not one of the Clorox-reeking "authentic" fish slab places that one can find on many a block here in the city. Sushi Bistro beats the heck out of authentic!
Pros: Fish is fresh, fun roll combos
Cons: Can be crowded
