I've stopped in several times since moving to Russian Hill and have always gotten good wine recommendations and felt comfortable browsing or just chatting with the staff. Every person I've spoken with there easily qualifies as a true wine enthusiast.
Pros: $15 and under wine, convenient location, wine tasting

Great wine shop, and their Wednesday night wine tasting is fun - guys pouring are very friendly and willing to talk about the wines as much or as little as you want. The better known wine nights can get pretty crowded (italian wines, etc), but still worth going to. (Not really a singles pick up spot -- from a female perspective anyway -- more girls than guys as a general rule, and the guys that come are usually w. someone.)
Pros: small but great wine shop, staff very friendly, suprisingly good prices on stemware (limited selection though)
Cons: parking (it is in Russian Hill, after all)

Steve and Jeremy are knowledgeable and friendly - and they taste every wine they put on the shelves. They find the hidden gems of Italy, France, Spain, Australia, Germany (and of course California) that drink as if they should cost two or three times their prices. If you were thinking of buying a ho hum $10-18 bottle of Cab or Chard at Safeway for dinner or a party, I guarantee the'll find you a bottle that will make you go wow. If you are looking for harder-to-find, mid-priced regional wines - Southern Italians, Venetos, St Josephs, Chiroubles, Toros, Prioratos - they have those at prices well below more marketed cousins of similar quality. And of course they carry the high-end as well. Plus doggie treats for your canine companion!
