After reading all their reviews I decided to try the restaurant with a couple of friends. We made a reservation and were on time. Our waitress was very attentive and suggested us a nices couple of dishes... Their food arrived at good time, and nicely presented. After we finished our dinner, we order some flan and a sponge cake soaked in tons of milk.. umm, delicious!!!
The best of all was that nobody rush us to leave and we could enjoy our meal and the night.
Pros: Parking, Inexpensive

Just north of Cesar Chavez on Mission is Nicaragua, a restaurant that I have been eating at for decades and which has managed not to mess up its signature dishes grilled or stewed pork with fried plantains, fried cheese, and cabbage salad on the side, or its (not piquant) onion and tomato salsa even through changes in ownership.
The empenadajas (stuffed with cheese or with ground meat) are good, but the entrees are too filling for me to order (as are desserts, including tres leches).
The carne asada (beefsteak) seems a bit tough to me. The fried whole fish is good, but the dish I go specifically there for is tajadas con chancho y queso. Whether stewed or grilled, the pork is tender and quite lean.
(BTW, if you have never had it, yucca has less flavor than potatoes; indeed, none at all that I can detect. Not all Latino food is spicy hot!)
The kitchen is slow. The waitresses are friendly (and bilingual)
My main frustration is that I don't know why it is necessary to ask for tortillas when the good arrives, especially when I ask for them when ordering, but every time ...
The jukebox can also be too loud. The decor is folk kitsch.
The restaurant does not accept credit cards or checks. It is open daily 11am-9pm.
PROS: pork
CONS: blaring jukebox sometimes

This is a little place that you might overlook if you didn't know exactly where you were going. I never knew there was food specific to the Yucatan but if it's all like this, bring it on. The plaintain appetizers were artistically stacked and served with sour cream and salad garnish, very tasty. My friend had a pan-fried sea bass that was perfect - I tasted it. It came with rice, beans and a salad. I had the carne asada and what a taste treat it was. We were both very happy, very satisfied, and will definitely return.

Poc Chuc is one of the few worthwhile BYOs in SF. It also happens to serve fantastic Mayan cuisine (think turkey). It's tucked away below Mission on 16th, which keeps the Marina away. Even Mission pros don't appear to know much about the Chuc. And here I am, posting about it.
Pros: Excellent food, inexpensive, friendly, BYOB
Cons: Can be busy (when there's not a depression on).
