What other reviewers have said, I agree is all true. I've eaten here many times because I work in the neighborhood. This place is a "lunchtime" restaurant. You won't find dinner here. They have specials for each day of the week, and for instance the Wednesday special was Pollo entomatado or bistek. But today they were out of Bistek. But I recommend that you call and check when they have Bajo available and get that. It's a good value and enough to feed two people if they are not BIG eaters. Includes platanos, salad, beef and yuca. Also check out the central american drinks, maybe you've never heard of one or two, like they have tamarindo, chilla, horchata(nicaraguan style, not Mexican style) and other drinks. Carry your food to the table on a tray.
Pros: authentic Nicaraguan, basic but consistent service
Cons: could be long line and crowded, not much parking

I love this place. Charlie Harley turned me onto it in 1979, before the current husband-wife team began operating the joint, and expanded to 2 rooms. It is the cheapest delicious meal in town, totally declassee. I go for the puerco frito, my partner prefers sopa de res. It's all good.
Pros: food, warmth, price, service, simplicity
Cons: chairs not that comfortable

After reading all their reviews I decided to try the restaurant with a couple of friends. We made a reservation and were on time. Our waitress was very attentive and suggested us a nices couple of dishes... Their food arrived at good time, and nicely presented. After we finished our dinner, we order some flan and a sponge cake soaked in tons of milk.. umm, delicious!!!
The best of all was that nobody rush us to leave and we could enjoy our meal and the night.
Pros: Parking, Inexpensive

I've been here several times, both for brunch and dinner, and the food has been really tasty and fresh every time. We liked everything we've tried, including the ceviches, the soups, all of the entrees, and the sangria. The service is very friendly and accommodating, although it can be a little slow so don't go here if you're in a hurry. They are very nice about refilling the complimentary starters, even though we always power through the canchita (peruvian popcorn).

Poc Chuc is one of the few worthwhile BYOs in SF. It also happens to serve fantastic Mayan cuisine (think turkey). It's tucked away below Mission on 16th, which keeps the Marina away. Even Mission pros don't appear to know much about the Chuc. And here I am, posting about it.
Pros: Excellent food, inexpensive, friendly, BYOB
Cons: Can be busy (when there's not a depression on).

When we walked up, the place was pretty empty. Nonetheless, we walked in and had an amazing meal. We tried the tapas(cervice), salad (warm goat cheese) and entrees (skirt steak and scallions), and it was fantastic. Licking-the-plate fantastic.
Pros: Tequillas, tapas, salads, main courses
Cons: I can only eat and drink so much.....

I grew up on Colombian food and I live in Portland, Oregon and this place really brought me back home. This famliy has been operating here for 25 years and the food tells the story. The ambience/building doesn't represent the food. A meal that left me & my girlfriend stuffed costed only $18.00. The dining room gets packed quickly as there are only about a dozen tables. Try: Oxtail Soup, Arepas.
Pros: Value, Taste, Location (3 blocks from 24th Mission Station)
Cons: Ambience, Obviously Older Building

Since the owner is a family friend, I've been visiting this little Mission shop since I was a kid. Now I realize how lucky I was! Head straight to the back of the store and look for the ladies grinding masa and making their delicious homemade tortillas. They also sell the best chicken tamales and carnitas I've ever had, as well as breakfast burritos and lots of other prepared foods.
The shop also sells everything you would need to prepare your own mexican meal at home.
