I had very little idea what I was looking for when I went into Goldberry, but Margie helped me build the perfect ring for my fianc?. All I knew was that I wanted a square cut diamond and gave a price range, and Margie took over from there. She showed me examples of different ring options for settings and bands, then explained how to identify a truly great diamond. By the time I left, my head was spinning but I knew exactly what I wanted after knowing nothing when I walked it. I went back to choose a diamond and a band and in a few weeks got the perfect ring that my fianc? absolutely loves- have a excellent 1.70 carat D color VVS2 clarity cushion diamond with 1.37 carats of D color VVS2 princess diamonds in the band.
Pros: great service, knowledgeable, comfortable environment

If you're ready to buy some beautiful jewelry, be it a diamond engagement ring or an emerald bracelet, I can't imagine going anywhere but goldberry. The quality at Tiffanys is SO overpriced - you can get such better diamonds elsewhere. Margie at goldberry gets you the whitest, biggest diamonds for the price. And she's Bob Dylan's ex-girlfriend, so you get a story too! She'll walk you through the whole procedure and spend as much time as needed teaching you about jewelry so that you can make an informed decision and get the best quality for the money. And her simple, beautiful lines are timeless. HIGHLY recommended.
Pros: pay for quality instead of a name!
Cons: none!

My fiance got a beautiful Burmese ruby from Goldberry. I love it. Its timeless and unique. The store on Sacramento Street is just as wonderful and you can get lost looking at all the stunning jewelry.

Bottom line, I'm pleased with the ring I got for my wife, and I feel like I got a quality diamond and platinum setting at a decent price. I can, however, see why some people have written in their reviews here that they were put off by Margie's sales approach. In my experience she did a lot more talking than listening (talking "at" me, rather than conversing "with" me). But ultimately she is knowledgeable about the jewelry she sells, and the result (the ring) was nice, and fairly priced. To me, that's what was most important.
Pros: Great out-of-store jewel selection
Cons: Slightly clunky sales process

Engagement Ring Purchase- A great end to an otherwise terrifying process.
As the title hints, this was a fairly scary process for me. I met the love of my life, I had money, now I needed THE perfect ring. My first stop: Tiffany & Co (Union Square, SF). The result: fear, intimidation, disappointment. I studied up on the 4 Cs, I set a budget for myself, and thought it would be as simple as walking in, picking a huge, brilliant stone, and walking out with that little blue box. Wow - was I wrong. I wasn't treated poorly, but it was clear that to them, I was simply just another boy who knew nothing about diamonds, had fallen in love, and was ready to part with a huge chunk of cash - as is the tradition. I couldn't believe how little (literally tiny) my money could buy in that store. That is not even to mention quality (or lack there of).
My next move: google "yelp engagement rings in San Francisco"
Near the top of the list was Goldberry. I e-mailed Margie and before she even wanted to set up a meeting, she explained her philosophy and mode of operation. She is a designer who deals exclusively in perfect stones. The part that I really liked, is how she took the time to educate me on what exactly this means. Perfection on paper is just the first test that a stone must pass (D color, no fluorescence, Excellent cut/symmetry/polish). Then there was something that I had never heard of before, but really could relate to - light performance. In my opinion, light performance takes a rather subjective grading process and adds a very objective component. Most of you probably have never heard of light performance with respect to diamond quality, and I'll leave it to Margie to educate those of you who want to know more. Simply put, it is what makes one diamond out shine another even if the two receive identical grading reports on paper.
The bottom line: without prompting me, Margie had me pick between 4 diamonds (all perfect on paper). After examining them for as long as I wished, I chose one of the slightly smaller, less expensive stones because in terms of light performance, it clearly outperformed the others (even the larger ones). Margie completely agreed with my assessment. I can't imagine a salesperson at a larger jewelry store ever guiding you towards a less expensive stone if you had already told them you were willing to spend more (this really impressed me about Margie)!
The specs: 1.23 carats, D color, Excellent cut/symmetry/polish, No fluorescence (mounted in one of Margie's 4-pronged Tiffany settings - it really showcases the stone beautifully)
The result: My fiance said YES! She loves the ring! Her friends love the ring! Her mother, her grandmother, and my sister all loved the ring! I think you probably get the point.
My recommendation: if you are buying an engagement ring for the first time, or weren't satisfied with a previous result, AT LEAST talk to Margie at Goldberry as a next step. She won't sugar coat things and bend over backwards to earn your business. She will, however, commit to finding you a perfect stone (while working within your budget) if you are willing to put in the time and learn about the process. Honestly, it was time consuming process compared to walking into Tiff any's and leaving with that blue box (leave yourself at least a month to actually get the ring in your hand). But most important: 1) my wife and I own a perfect diamond 2) based on our recent insurance appraisal, we got a really great deal 3) I never felt taken advantage of (that is a huge thing for me when spending a significant amount of money)!
P.S. My fiance and I were so satisfied, we went back to Goldberry for both of our wedding bands and she lets us come by anytime we want to have our rings professionally cleaned!
Pros: Excellent client service, high quality
