We went to the Marriott for for a meeting, during break time a group of us decided to go for a walk in the area and saw this line of people waiting to get in to this place. From the side you could see the freshly baked puffs. It was so worth the wait and how delicious and warm and FRESH they were! We ordered extras to bring back.

visited shimo once for dinner with a friend who recommended the restaurant. it's not that easy to see even though located on a main drag but definitely worth visiting. it's a no frills japanese place with fresh fish and great hamachi kama if you like the collar of a fish...cooked. plus parking is more doable than in other parts of the richmond district and in walking distance to great dessert places.

I've eaten here several times, and the food has always been d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. Fresh and great tasting, and consistent every time. I will always recommend this restaurant!
Pros: I'm very impressed with the quality of food at very reasonable prices
Cons: no waiting area makes it really awkward... make reservations.

I have been going to Sapporo-ya since I was a child, and have enjoyed their miso ramen. I've even had miso ramen in Japan on several occasions, and Sapporo-ya's is the BEST. I literally compare all other miso ramens to Sapporo-ya's and I have yet to enjoy any other miso ramen the way I enjoy the one here. I can't comment on any of the other ramens or dishes at Sapporo-ya because I always order the same thing whenever I go. If you?re looking for something good to eat during your next visit to San Francisco's Japantown, I highly recommend Sapporo-ya.

My ex-boyfriend introduced me to Shimo's on Clement and after we broke up, I wondered if I should go back for fear of running into him. I decided it was worth the risk because the food is so good at such a reasonable price. I've gone there for years now and try to go every time I go back to visit San Francisco, dragging anyone willing to come with me. Most of my guests are unimpressed with the atmosphere (not trendy by any means) and the parking (a pain). But the quality of the fish for the prices they charge absolutely cannot be beat. Like I said, I've gone there for years and only once have I ever been disappointed by the freshness of the fish. Every other time, the fish has been flavorful, cut perfectly, and melt in your mouth fresh. Definitely order the spicy tuna, negihama, and salmon nigiri with a big bottle of beer. And leave room for green tea ice cream at the end!
Pros: fresh sushi, good prices, fresh sushi
Cons: parking, service sometimes spotty

Probably the best place for Japanese food in the Sunset area, Noriega Teriyaki House delivers great food at very reasonable prices, very generous portion sizes, and excellent service. One entree and one or two sushi rolls is more than enough to satisfy two people. Parking can be a challenge but not usually an issue most of the time.

I found the elderly couple to be incredibly sweet and charming. If you're expecting the customer service of a chain restaurant, go elsewhere - but come here to experience incredibly fresh sashimi. At the sushi bar, we met a sushi chef from another restaurant who told us that this was the best sushi in SF. I have to agree.
Pros: Location, quality of sashimi, charm of elderly couple
Cons: Limited cooked food on menu

we wandered into this little restaurant and some how got incredibly lucky! the host was wonderfully accommodating and pushed two tables together so the two of us could sit close, and our service was unforgettable! our peruvian server, andy, never once interrupted us while we were involved in conversation, but any time he sensed an opening he'd make excellent suggestions and tell us a little about himself. even the busboy would smile and chat for a minute but was also well mannered and never imposing. everyone was personal yet respectful of our space. WHY is that so hard to find?
i thought the food was second to none. if you are looking for dollar value then go somewhere else. this chef is an artist and every plate felt like his creation down to the tiniest detail. it's japanese french fusion at it's absolute finest! all the way to the desserts, if one can stay open to the experience, it is unforgettable!
the interior design is worth sitting and appreciating as well. there is even a little ceramic rest for all the silver and the chopsticks, and the dishes are all dainty and impeccably paired to frame every course. one definitely comes out smiling after experiencing what looked to be the finest bathroom in the city! what a great touch!!! (i still believe the saying you can tell how good a restaurant is by the appearance of the bathroom....and this is the place to prove that !)
Pros: perfection to the smallest detail, coolest bathroom in the city!
Cons: parking!!!

this place has such high grade sushi! reminds me of the places in japan where there isn't much ambiance, but they focus on what they know. the sushi chef/owner is pretty intense and serious about the quality of his fish. no kitchen food, so don't bring the friends that always order teriyaki.
Pros: sushi, service
Cons: not open on weekdays
