i don't know what place the others (bad reviews) went to, but it wasn't maki. sushi is fine, but a must is the teriyaki. this place rocks. don't be a stupe call at 4 for a reservation.
better yet believe the other bad reviews so our favorite place isn't ruined with too many people.
Pros: great food, owner is always there, and run by women.

My boyfriend and I checked out this great little sushi place with some friends last week. We started with the seaweed salad, which was the best we've ever had! It came out on a huge plate with great additions of cabbage in the middle and other types of seawood. Would definitely reccomend it if you're a fan of the original.
We ordered our usual spicy tuna, and salmon with mango roll. They were both delicious and very fresh tasting. The vegetarian rolls were also very good. We've definitely found our new favorite sushi place. I know there are a lot out there, but it's tough to want to go anywhere else.
If you've been there before, give it another chance. If you haven't, you must go! Bring your own non-disposable chop sticks and you'll get a free appetizer. They also have sake specials throughout the week.
Pros: awesome fresh sushi, great value, fun atmosphere

I'm writing this after my third time visiting Kyo-Ya since the first time in June 2007. I live in Oregon, but when my boyfriend and I come to San Francisco for business trips, we make it a point to visit this quiet gem. I've never had their main entrees, like their beef or butterfish (although it sounds amazing), but I love their nigiri sushi and their sushi rolls. The yellowtail is superb, it has the distinct flavor of tuna, but more savory and just melt-in-your-mouth good. The spicy rolls are excellent too. It's always been quiet and never crowded when we're there.
Pros: Sushi, waitress customer service, location
Cons: Managers seem rushed, lack of desserts, parking

I have been reading all of these reviews and sadly, I think half of these people just don't know what they are talking about. I go to Fuku's at least once every 2 weeks. Never ever had bad fish! Service might be slow sometime, but the food quality makes up for it. The sushi chef is very funny, polite and absolute genius! Would go there again! If you want Omakase, sit at the sushi bar for best selections!!
Pros: good fish.
Cons: In Japan town..

After visiting a dentist in the area, I saw Kitchen Kura and decided to give it a try. The interior feels very homey and what you'd imagine a small town restaurant in Japan would be like. The lunch menu is very simple with maybe 15 items, all with photos to make your choices easy. For $6.70 you get to pick two main entree items and also get a heaping pile of rice and a fresh garden salad. Talk about value. The food was delicious and not at all greasy as some Asian food can be. If you are on the way to the Zoo, especially with your family, this is a must try spot. Not only is the food healthy and delicious, it's very inexpensive. Just a couple of blocks from the metro. I also found some great produce stores in the vicinity that had great fruit at a fraction of the cost of chain supermarkets.
Pros: Great Food, Inexpensive, Healthy, Great Shopping in the area
Cons: A little out of the way

Love.. Love.. Love! Totally in love with this restaurant. Where should i begin? First, the price is unbeatable. Second, the food is extremely delicious (some of my favorite are Caterpillar & Rainbow Roll, Nabeyaki & Teriyaki Udon, Salmon Bento). Last, great service & lovely atmosphere. I never been to other lunch spot in downtown who offer better customer service with a beautiful small garden right in front . My company always order catering from them since 2 years ago and never face any disapointment at all. I'm highly recomment this restaurant.
Pros: Great Value for Affordable Price & Food Quality. Beautiful Ambiance & Great Service.
Cons: During busy hour, you might have to wait in line to order ( I never wait more than 5 minutes, it goes very quick). But it is totally worth it.

i was a regular here when i lived in the neighborhood. the staff was always very friendly and learned quickly what my favorite items on the menu were. plenty of the dining near union square is pricey, sterile, and impersonal but not tempura house. great prices, good sushi and tempura, delicious green tea (and green tea ice cream), and not at all pretentious. check it out sometime for a low-key sushi experience.
Pros: value, staff, casual

This place has great environment, nice service and fantastic food. You must try "Together" roll and "Full moon(?)" ( not sure about the name of dish, but it has cheese in it!!) They are my favorites. I think this place is pretty romantic.. great for date!
