I was recommended this restaurant by my plumber and he was dead on! The waitstaff were very gracious, and on the ball, considering the night my friends and I visited, the restaurant was completely packed.
The food was absolutely upto par with all the major five star restaurants in the city and we were all very pleased when the bill arrived, because I think we tried about two of everything so we could all share.
Great find!

Despite limited seating, I'm always able to grab a table (I'm a regular). I LOVE the miso soup and the sushi is awesome. The waiters are very attentive and Joji is very sweet. A great place for unpretentious sushi.
Pros: Great Service, Good Food, Great Shops Nearby
Cons: A bit pricey

If you haven't had Ichigo Daifuku, you have truly missed one of this life's great pleasures. It is a delicious combination of mochi and fresh strawberry that will blast your buds clear out of your mouth.
On top of Ichigo Daifuku, Eiji specializes in tofu. Now, I am not a huge tofu fan, and my friends know I like my meats, but the the tofu here is so elegantly prepared and presented that I just had to try a bit ... Followed by the freshest, elegantly put together sushi of course.
This is one of the few restaurants in town where you can taste the passion that the chef has for food in every sight & bite. Fortunately, for us locals who have discovered this gem, its a bit hard to find ... shhhh.
p.s. - Eiji did well to deserve my first 5 star rating.
Pros: tofu, dessert, and of course the sushi
Cons: none

I've been to Tataki many times seeing as I live two blocks down. I take everyone here who enjoys high quality sushi at a reasonable price. The chefs Ray and Kin are fun to talk to if you sit at the sushi bar. The wait staff is friendly and eager to explain Tataki's sustainable concept. Even the decor of the restaurant is fashioned from sustainable materials. If you like spicy the Dynamite roll is a must try. The rest of the specialty rolls are well thought out and most importantly, delicious. And the sashimi is some of the best I've had in the city. It usually gets busy around 9 or so Thursday through Saturday and it only seats about 20. This is a great little neighborhood spot.
Pros: Sushi, Service, Good date spot
Cons: Not always enough seats

I noticed this restaurant when I was walking down the street on O'ffarrell. It is a very nice restaurant with a very calming atmosphere. I actually ate here for lunch and dinner. During night time the waitresses wear traditional kimono, very interesting. The food is GREAT. You can actually taste the difference and freshness compared to all the other commercial japanese restaurants like kitaro. It's not cheap but definatley worth the price. It's a very traditional restaurant and an unique dining experience. Can't forget the sake, they are a must! I will be going back there again.
Pros: friendly staff, very clean, not noisy
Cons: parking

My girlfriend and I recently returned from a trip to Japan, and we were looking for a culinary experience that would help take us back. Something beyond the Americanized standards: sushi/sashimi, udon, teriyaki, tempura. And so we found Kappa, who clearly state that they DO NOT serve sushi.
The intimate setting as well as the welcoming and kind owners transported us back to the alleys of Japan. After we entered through a sliding wooden door next to a Japanese-only sign, the daily specials (fried sweet corn, Japanese eggplant) and the rest of our meal were simply divine. While we did not have the Koryori prix-fixe menu (1 day in advance reservations required), everything from the iced green tea to the halibut to the black skinned pork was truly reflective of traditional Japanese cuisine - simple, fresh and impossibly delicate. While the menu changes daily depending on what's fresh for the season, you can expect a welcoming and intimate Japanese experience - a true gem in SF!
As a seasoned restaurant SF junkie - Kappa has made my SF top 5 - and already planning my next visit.
Reservations highly recommended, as due to space there is only 1 seating.
Pros: Truly traditional Japanese food, service, ambience
