My girlfriend lives in North Beach and we have definitely ventured out to test the waters in terms of italian restaurants, but it wasn't until we found Vicoletto where we truly experienced some of the best food in the whole area. Nestled on Green St. next to other bars and restaurants, this restaurant is a hidden gem in an area with too many mediocre "touristy" italian restaurants. The menu AND wine list is all reasonably priced and certainly affordable.
We got the tortellini with prociutto, which was one of the best tasting dishes I've had. Everything was homemade and authentic. They even brought us a free appetizer of goat cheese with some sort of eggplant/pepper salsa that was very good.
The service was extremely friendly and offered up great suggestions. I highly recommend Vicoletto for dates and other casual dining you might partake in. It is above and beyond better than 95% of the italian restaurants in the area.
Pros: Food, wine, everything
Cons: Service was a little slow, but the friendliness of staff made up for it

I've eaten here 3 times now and it hasn't dissapointed. They have a great selection of wine, and the service is friendly. The food is good, and has only gotten better the more times I've been. Pasta dishes are fresh, good portions, and decently priced. I had the linguine w/ clams and thought it was good. The Chicken Marsala was out of this world good!! I kid you not it's some of the best I've had in 3+ years here. This is a restaurant that I'm sure will be a favorite of NB for years to come.
Be sure to bring in the coupon when you go b/c it's a steal of deal. Free calimari & brucheta, which is good.
While the interior won't blow you away or make you feel like your eating authentic Italian cusine, get over it, and try this place out. You'll be gald you did.

This is our favorite Italian restaurant in San Francisco!
It is very small and crowded, don't think about going on a weekend without a reservation. The menu is small and the food it top quality. They always have a fresh fish special and it have never been less than wonderful.

I have been going to Little Joe's for many, many years and it is absolutely the BEST Italian food there is. I've tried Italian restaurants all around, and none can ever compare to this. My favorite is the meat raviolis and meatballs! This is homestyle Italian food, very authentic; unlike the pretentious and pricey so-called Italian restaurants found elsewhere. This is how Italian food started out with the immigrants and how it still is in Italy, before being Americanized and pretentious. The North Beach location did have more character, but the food is as great as ever and it is a pleasure to see the owner, Franco!
I don't understand the reviews by those who aren't impressed, maybe they're used to Spaghetti-O's or those expensive places that only give you 4 ravioli's for a hefty price...
By the way, parking is validated and there's a huge garage across the street, so that's easy.
Pros: the best raviolis and meat sauce
Cons: none

Absolutely fantastic. I have eaten here now four times and I have nothing but great things to say. I recently moved to the area and walk over a mile to get their "North Beach" sandwich. Sit and eat in the park, great for people watching.

This restaurnat is outstanding and has never failed to let us down. We make the trip to the city from the Peninsula even in rush-hour traffic and have done so countless times since we 'found' them serving their authentic too special Focacia (like none other) at a charity event.
Farina's consistant and excellent quality food is prepared and served with attention to detail. The pasta is superb, the best outside of Genova, Italy, the menu and wine selections are diverse.
Attention to service from ALL of the staff has been unique, friendly and professional at the same time - and it doesn't matter whether you're dining mid-week or on a busy weekend.
Pros: Authentic and consistant
Cons: If there are any - it's worth it.

Mocca on Maiden Lane is a charming little French-like bistro just off of Union Square that serves amazing sandwiches at even better prices. Try the open-faced turkey with cranberry and brie! If the weather is nice, try to snag a table outside on Maiden Lane. Great people watching!
