I heard at the beginning of August 2008 that this store's lease may be up in 2010. Apparently, they want to build condos with retail on the street level. What a shame. This is the only decent grocery store in this neighborhood and is extremely convenient for people who don't have cars. I hope this is NOT true.

I just had a horrible experience at the Cala Foods on South Van Ness in the Mission. I was standing in line waiting to buy a couple of bottles of juice when a cashier (it may have been the manager; a tall Indian looking guy in a burgundy shirt) ) told the guy ahead of me to come over to a new register that he was opening. I walked over too and was now second in line at the newly opened register. The guy in front of me put his basket down and did not unpack it. I put my two bottles of juice behind his basket, which the cashier/manager saw me do. When the cashier/manager had rung up all of the items of the customer ahead of me, the customer swiped his credit card to pay. All of a sudden the cashier/manager grabbed my bottles of juice and swiped them too as part of the other customer's transaction. I told him that what he had just done to which he replied, "Why didn't you say something? The transaction is completed now!" I replied that I just had said something to which he responded that I should have used a divider between the basket and my things and waved a divider at me. I told him that since the customer ahead of me had not unpacked his basket and since it was completely full, I thought it would be obvious that the juice did not belong to that customer. He continued to berate me and I decided to leave. I told him that his customer service was shocking and that he had no manners. Not surprisingly this had no effect. I am appalled that I was treated this poorly.

Last year, I lived right across the street from a Cala Foods, so I did all my grocery shopping there. Although I liked the convenience of having a store right across the street, it bred an absolute hatred of Cala in me. They are expensive, especially compared to places like Trader Joe's, and their food is disgusting. On three separate occasions, I had to take food back because it was moldy or rotten the day I brought it home! I don't think it is too much to ask that their food is safe to eat. The one thing that I liked about this store is that it was open 24 hours. I go out of my way to avoid this store now.
