Hot jazz in Glen Park? Honestly, if the BART station wasn't right there, I don't know if I'd even know about this unassuming neighborhood even though it's only a few blocks from my apartment. Even then, I'd hardly think of it as a destination to go out to at night. But here's a real swank lounge and they book some rippin' combos many nights out of the week to drink your cocktails by. A real here-goes-the-neighborhood kind of place. But if it's gotta go, they might as well feature live music.

Another jazz club? Not there are that many, but I didn't realize that suddenly it was a viable business model again. Do people still go out and spend money on jazz? Heck, I play jazz, so I 'm one to talk. I love the stuff, but I wouldn't want to be in the business of trying to sell it, in this day and age.
Keeping with the tradition of candle light, and small, round, tables, the Octavia Lounge is the newest addition to the adult contemporary social scene on Market, right where the Mission runs out into Civic center/castro cusp. Not sure if being in a non neighborhood area is good (pull from everywhere) or bad (no one thinks about going in that direction). Either way, if you want to get all sophisto with oysters, booze and jazz, this is a classy joint. The music runs a little square for my tastes, but it does at most of the "jazz" clubs in this city, which is why rarely spend my money there.

If you love karaoke but hate the public humiliation factor, then head down to Japantown. At Do Re Mi, you can reserve your own room for you and your buddies to sing the night away in private. Each room has its own karaoke system, couches, and even a disco ball! What more could you ask for? The downside: they don't serve any alcohol. But there's always the option of brown-bagging it, just be discreet.

Big big store. This store mostly sells art supplies, frames, and other stuff relating to those. They have all sorts of frames that can fit any poster or picture you want. They have everything you need in there. Plus, the workers are super! They know everything about anything. Great place.

This store is small in comparison to other used music stores. The layout isn't the most managable, and finding what your looking for is a bit hard. Also, not a very impressive collection of used titles. You just might find something you're looking for, if you haven't found it at Amoeba.

I had some friends from out of town over, and they wanted to see Alcatraz. I realized that even though I grew up in San Francisco, I hadn't seen it before either. So we quickly booked a tour through Blue and Gold Fleet. It was only about $60 for four people, and it was a really fun tour. The commentary is pretty educational without being boring. The only thing that might bother people is that there's a hike up to the cellhouse, and its really tiring. Good exercise, though, and there is an hourly shuttle for those who aren't up to it.

We have seen two shows in the last week at this intimate club with professional service and great food. Both times packed to the gills with adoring fans. Both times we loved our food. You stay in the same seat for dinner and the show if you have dinner and I recommend it highly.

A small theatre playing new releases. I like this theatre because it is not that big but not that small. Playing new movies and at a great location in San Francisco. Pretty clean place not like some others.
The price of this theatre is not expensive or cheap the price is average and the food is not that bad for a theatre.

This is a surprisingly fun par 3 course in scenic Golden Gate park. If you're looking to work on your short game, or just want to have a nice afternoon golf outing in the city, this is a great option. It's usually pretty easy to get on the course. Since this is a public, par 3, there can many beginners on the course, but enjoy the views while you wait.

All you non-musicians, I'm not sure why you'd be reading this post, but have you ever been to a real practice space complex? Very weird scene. Everyone there is a musician and there's a ton of 'tude in the air. I love stopping for a moment and letting all that disparate music in the halls mix together into something far more interesting than what you'd probably hear if you were actually listening to just one of these groups with their big stacks of amps, bad hair, and stolen licks. For the true practice space experience in SF, you've got to visit Secret Studios. They've got really nice rooms and a history of some big bands having practiced there way back when. There's a parking lot with fancy electronic gate, a store with juice, food, guitar strings, 9-volts. Rooms aren't cheap, but that's why you split rent with 6 other bands.
