I absolutely love Booksmith on Haight Street. This is the perfect place to go if you're looking to browse for a new book. They always have great selections featured on their tables, and good recommendations from the staff. They also get great authors to come and do readings/signings, like David Sedaris and Dan Clowes.

I always assumed from the name that it was one of those mall style bookstore chains (isn't there one called Booksmith?), but actually, this is an anti-authoritarian fueled independent shop, one of the best in the city, that has all sorts of cool stuff for tourists and yokels alike. They do readings here with a monthly listing of distinguished writers that tend towards the counterculture Haight St tinged themes.

The Booksmith is a decent sized bookstore. It's the only one on the Haight, at least that sells new books. The staff is knowledgeable and not overly earnest like you'll find in some small stores. The offer a good mix of mainstream and less well know books. As with any independent bookstore, expect to pay a bit more compared to the big chains, but you'll be supporting a local business.
