This was THE BEST hair cut and colour I have received from my long time hair dresser Anna. She had been working at an Aveda concept salon. The Aveda colour always faded fast and lost its sheen. She is using a new colour line at Bella Union and it is WONDERFUL. My colour is over a week old and the sheen is luxurious and the cut is perfect. The atmosphere at The Bella Union is friendly and up beat. Parking was very easy. If any one seeing this review was with Anna at Chakra, highly recommend you follow her to The Bella Union. well, you know how it is when you are traveling; you look in the mirror and realize you have a chea pet that has taken residency on your head. Well that was my plight. After looking high and low for a salon, I found Bella,that advertised walk ins welcome and hours to 8 pm. I drive over on a wed. At 6:45 to find them closed. I call and a girl answers to say they just closed early. Well nice of them to let their customers know of their variable hours :o(

Upon entering The Bella Union, my unkempt dreads were mussy, fuzzy, yucky little stubs that I kept covered and hid from people due to embarrassment and humiliation. Jet has worked on my hair before, and she truly is an artist who is an expert at the art of hairstyling. She always makes me feel comfortable even though I tend to sabotage my hair, and she always has amazing ideas on how to fix me up. She spent all day working on my sad little stubby guys, adding extensions and dying them and everything, until they looked so amazing you would never know those tiny little guys were under there. We had fun the whole day, and while waiting for my hair to dry I saw her whip out a few more amazing and flattering hairstyles on other women who were thrilled with her work. Thanks again Jet for being the best! I love you!

If I were a hairdresser, Jet Black at The Bella Union would be my gold standard for excellence in the field. I would aspire to be as good at my job, and as charming as she is. Jet makes everything seem effortless, in a profession which seems like it could be pretty difficult at times. You're navigating people's insecurities, their potential inability to communicate just what they want done, etc. You'd have to have some chops (pun intended) in all sorts of disciplines, such as art (overall look of a person), science (how to do color), counseling (yadda yadda), diplomacy, openness... It used to fill me with dread to go see my old stylist. Now I look forward to each appointment I have with Jet Black. And it feels like I'm getting a bargain even though I broke through my $50 haircut limit to start seeing her. Totally worth it! Love her! Pros: Relaxed, yet organized/clean Cons: can't think of

I have lived in San Francisco, CA for a year now, and finding a hair salon and stylist that fit my liking was tough. I had been to many salons before Bella Union, and was about to give up all hope. Every night I would walk by Bella Union on my way home from work, and I would see the same hair dresser working late every night (I'm talking so late, everyone else had gone home). Until I walked into the Shabby Sheek, and charming salon that is "Bella Union," I did not know what I was missing out on. One bad hair day, I decided to call and make an appointment with the guy who always works late. Fortunately, they knew exactly who I was talking about and I went in for my appointment the following week. Ever since that one phone call I have been SOLD! Bella Union and Gene Palmer are my heros! Bella is Ballin', and Gene works really hard to get your hair perfect the first time! He's the best!!!

I live in lower Haight and thought I would check out one of the local hair salons. Based on the reviews for this salon, I decided to give Bella Union a try. I didn't have an appointment -- so the one stylist available took me. He was a bit quiet -- kinda awkward -- but we got to chatting and he gave me the dish on the salon. They are all independent -- and the experience levels vary. I had brought a picture to show him what look I wanted -- he only looked at it once. My longish hair was cut to shoulder length -- was uneven -- one side shorter than the other. I mentioned it to him -- he just added more product to "style" it even. He said something about the new retro 80s uneven look. I actually cried when I got home. Choose carefully -- based on the reviews, some of the stylists here must be good. But don't take the one with the empty chair. Cons: Skill levels vary

Gillian also does amazing makeup for photo shoots, etc. I can attest to her abilities personally and through the happy referrals I've given her. You are in good hands. Pros: Good location; comfortable setting; friendly atmosphere Cons: Sometimes you get a machine instead of a live receptionist. Leave a msg to make appt and they get back quickly.
