This is not a place you would go every week because it gets pricey and is crowded with tourists, but you have to see the view. Its somethink you have to do at least once, and a great place to take visitors in town for a little while for a drink and to show off the city - try to go on a clear day, and you can see 360 degree views of both bridges and across the bay, including downtown and financial district. The martinis are wonderful and they have a huge long list of martinis, all for $10. Its centrally located just at the top of nob hill, and serve dinner as well, but be prepared to spend some real money if you plan to eat dinner as well. I would recommend coming here to relax, have a martini and share the view with good company.

A notorious speakeasy during Prohibition, Cafe du Nord is now a nightclub, restaurant and live music venue. However, it has still retained all the Victorian charm of the good ole days. Always featuring an eclectic offering of music, it is a great place to check out local and indie favorites for a good price.

A few days ago, my friend had a birthday and we went to Cha Cha Cha, a tapas restaurant in the Mission District. We ordered a few pitchers of sangria, which was delicious and not overly sweet. Then we had a series of small plates: fried calamari, chicken, beans and rice, scallops, and it was all delicious! This is a great place to go with a group if you enjoy tapas style meals.

More
Yeah, you're likely to have an expat on one side and a tourist or twenty on the other, but if you've spent the afternoon trapped in the shopping hell that is Union Square, there's nothing nicer than a well poured Murphy's Stout while sidled up to the bar at Johnny Foley's.
If I am ever in need of a time-out while exercising the bank card downtown, you can be sure I'll end up there before making my way through the tourists to get home.
