ABC Bakery Cafe is a good cafe to visit when you feel like getting some good portions for very little money. They mainly cater to the Chinese pallet, but they also serve American dishes (such as steak, fries), Japanese (udon), and Italian (spaghetti and fettuccine). Most of their dishes are under $5, and they have daily specials that cost even less. Best of all, they are open very late so you can get that midnight snack, whether it be a noodle soup or rice dish.

If you buy fresh bread in the markets around town, you might have noticed that some of the best crusty goodness around is baked by the Acme Bread Co.. These folks to do great bread. If you wake up early and get a loaf at a market, right off the truck, it'll be pretty fresh. But nothing beats going to the bakery itself. They do all sorts of styles of bread, but just ask what came off the racks most recently, maybe it'll even still be warm. Then go over to the cowgirl creamery (also in the Ferry Building) or to one of the produce markets, hunker down by the water and enjoy yourself a happy picnic.

For those of you who somehow haven't gotten on the in yet, try some Asian bakeries if you're looking for a cheap meal. Parking sucks, you might get pushed over by some old Asian person who wants to cut you in line, but you'll forget all of that once you taste some of their pastries.
I grew up eating birthday cakes from Alex's. Almost like sponge cake, but not quite. Frosting that delicately plays on your taste buds--read not too sweet. And the best part is that they just started making them in single serve portions. OR at least that's how I can justify to myself.
Their pork buns are also very good. I can't remember the price, but you can get them for under a buck.
By the way, be prepared for some pointing if you don't speak. It's hit or miss, but they'll take your money anyways.

I have always loved Grain d'Or, now called Andersen Bakery, for their perfect sandwiches and their delicious breads. They have been a mall staple for years, and for some reason they are all disappearing! This outpost in Japantown is the only one left in San Francisco (as far as I know). The chicken provolone sandwich is really good, they use pesto mayo and basil leaves to give it that extra punch. I also love the pesto and the paisano bread. I hope this one doesn't disappear like the rest...

The staff here is sparse, they are usually in the back baking. Their english speaking skills are sometimes minimal, but as long as you know what you want (pick and point), there shouldn't be a problem. I recommend the flan and the pan de leche. Their breads are quite soft and chewy, very good.

This is a great donut place. They a baked fresh and they alway taste good. It is small and they serve chocolate milk out of the carton. I have tried the apple fritters but they were a little to big for me. Go here and eat the donuts and enjoy your life. I swear you will

I once had the pleasure of visiting the Sourdough Bakery located at the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. It was truly and entertaining visit. I hear that the clam chowder there is exquisite. The decorations there are also very creative. It seems as if you are walking into more of a Sourdough factory. There are many decorations MADE of sourdough bread, such as bread lobsters and animals as well.

Boudin's is classic San Francisco and shouldn't be missed when being dragged by your friends and family to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. The building is somewhat new and includes a bakery area with huge glass windows into the back room where you can watch hundreds of loaves of bread being baked at once. Of course the sourdough bread is a must try as is the clam chowder in a bread bowl. The quality of their clam chowder is nicer than what you can find at the little stands that line Fisherman's Wharf.

San Francisco based Bay Breads are a little bit of Parisian bliss. Their multiple locations mean you're never too far from a crunchy almond croissant, a succulent eclair, or a hearty apple tart. You can't go wrong-- the only drawback is that they're closed Mondays! I highly recommend the pan au chocolat.
