This might not be much of a revelation to people working in SF -- and I apologize for switching to the City on this Oakland forum -- but Working Girls' sandwiches are something special. I've tried all the chicken versions and the Blackened Red Snapper, and all are delicious, with my favorite being the Spicy Thai Chicken. The ingredients seem suitably fresh and the bread is good, but the toppings and sauces make the quality.
The other aspect of Working Girls' that I appreciate is the service. On one hand, it's just your basic lunch counter-style cafe -- but the manager knows my name, knows what I like, throws in free chips or a drink and generally sees to it that, even in a hectic midday lunch situation, my experience is a positive one.

This place ended up being our default, go-to lunch place when I worked at the Cannery for a spell. They have good, fresh baked bread here and make solid sandwiches with it. Who knows what we would have done if it wasn't for the Waterfront Bakery? You'd think inexpensive lunch was out of style or something. And I'd rather go hungry for the day than eat at most of the places in the area or pay the prices they were asking. But a good sandwich... Yes, when you're hungry and broke, that's something to be thankful for.

Like all other bakeries I have been to in Chinatown, this one was a packed as the other ones. You have to yell out your order, and there is no line for ordering. Nonetheless, I got my order after waiting for the crowd to disperse a little bit. The food was good, but not great. The prices were also average. I would recommend this place if you happen are hungry and you happen to see it.

More
One of San Francisco's oldest bakeries, this North Beach mainstay has been baking delicious desserts since 1914. Victoria Pastry Co. is deservedly famous for its Saint Honore cakes, creamy extravanganzas of crunchy pastry and rum-soaked sponge cake layered with whipped cream and topped with a ring of custard-filled cream puffs. Wedding cakes are also a specialty, and no one makes traditional multitiered cakes quite like the dazzling confectioners here

More
Union Street Coffee Roastery only employs about half a dozen employees, but the low numbers in employees do not affect the way they do business at all. The staff members are always nice and courteous, and they are always up for a bit of chatting with you if you have the time to do that. Their selection of drinks blows away almost all other independent coffee shops in the area, and their drinks are, by far, better than those offered at Starbucks and Peet's Coffee. Their food is just as good as their drinks, and they have cookies, cakes, dishes, and more for vegans and fans of organic foods (try their quiche; it's the best I have ever tasted). They have quite a few tables indoors, and several tables outside as well, if you wish to enjoy the scenery and breathe in some fresh air. They also offer free high-speed wireless Internet for those who would like to bring their own laptops or pay a small fee to use the computers they have there. Definitely worth a try!

This place has been in San Francisco for awhile and has some really interesting cookie choices. I like the "Tipper" cookies which have chocolate chips and M & Ms, and the "Hillary" cookies that are like brownies with pecans on the edge. I guess they like the Clintons. Anyway, it is a nice change from the standard Mrs. Fields for a mall cookie store.

I had a mediocre experience at the Chestnut Bakery. The cakes they have there are a little too sweet and they were out of coffee when I came. The pasteries are unusually expensive, approximately $5-6. There are lots of way better bakeries throughout San Francisco. The only thing I like about this bakery though was that it was not full, and you can find a comfortable place to sit down. posts and comments here

I stumbled upon this bakery when I was walking through Chinatown. The aroma that floated through the doors invited me in. I was tantalized by all the yummy desserts, breads, and other food items. I tried the sponge cake. It was very light and fluffy. And the prices were very inexpensive. I will definitely return there for a full cake. The fresh fruit cake looks really good and the prices are great.

Why settle for an imitation of this classic -- a fast-food "breakfast sandwich" -- when you can have the real thing? Pain au jambon for $2.95 -- is a meal in itself. Tartine pastry is the epitome of flakiness, the gruyere is tangy, and the ham smoky and slightly sweet.
Of course that is just one of many items from their menu. Regular croissants, quiche, bread pudding, scones, morning buns, pain au chocolate, and museli. Just a few of the items there. Lots of pressed sandwiches too.
Those are just some of the savory items. For sweets ... don't even get me started. Two of them are irresistable: their eclairs and the lemon-meringue cake.
Has anyone been to their restaurant on Valencia Street?
