Mara's is a tiny bakery in the heart of North Beach, and where I also head to if I'm craving some fresh made focaccia. It's always piled high in their front window along with lots of other delicious pastries, and a huge piece will only set you back a couple bucks. This place also has some really great canolis.
They also have a variety of Italian cookies that you can mix and match, though I've never tried those. Gelato and coffee too!

Schubert's is the BEST! The cakes are so light, but full of flavor! None of their cakes are too sweet or not sweet enough... they're just PERFECT! With all the different kinds of cakes, it's hard to just take 1 home! Their designs are BEAUTIFUL and one of a kind. Their prices are reasonable and they take most major credit cards, so it's convenient.
I was introduced to Schubert's by a family member and to my delight, I found out that we've been buying our cakes from them for about 10+ years now and counting! I come all the way from the East Bay to pick up a cake for a family function, so that should tell you how good they really are!

San Francisco based Bay Breads are a little bit of Parisian bliss. Their multiple locations mean you're never too far from a crunchy almond croissant, a succulent eclair, or a hearty apple tart. You can't go wrong-- the only drawback is that they're closed Mondays! I highly recommend the pan au chocolat.

Café Prague is the epitome of everything North Beach. (except for the Prague part, but what's in a name?). Drinks frothingly poured and steamed from gleaming brass machines, little tables to sit thigh-rubbingly close to your sweetie, old men at the bar sipping wine and conversing of the neighborhood, of the old days, gossip, who knows. I like being here, not just because Cafe Prague fits the stereotype (and I'm a sucker for places that get it right), but also, because the stereotype itself gets it right, which is why we were looking for it in the first place. Czech, Italian... what's the diff?

The little nibblers that you can get at Mrs. Field's Cookies are so much fun to eat. They're so small that you can almost convince yourself that you're really not splurging--that is until you can't stop eating them. If you've never had a nibbler--at least that's what I call them in my head--you're missing out. Basically, think cookie, but shrunken down to baby sized proportions.
What I especially love about Mrs. Fields Cookies is that they are soft baked. You almost don't need to chew.

This is a great donut place. They a baked fresh and they alway taste good. It is small and they serve chocolate milk out of the carton. I have tried the apple fritters but they were a little to big for me. Go here and eat the donuts and enjoy your life. I swear you will

I love the chocolate cake and the hot fudge sundaes at Just Desserts. This is what Citizen Cake wants to be! Just beware getting "Just Desserts" food anywhere else. You have to get it from the source or it isn't as good. I've found their desserts at gourmet grocery stores in the Peninsula and at the Metreon but they're not as good unless you get them at a Just Desserts location.

More
If you're looking for a bakery in the Sunset District, go to Sunset Bakery. They are famous for their fruit cakes because the cakes are very moist and filled with fruit. The sponge cakes are a tasty treat too. Baked goods such as the pork buns are not so good as the cakes and pastries. Hard to find parking so most people park in the bus stop.
