You can easily find this place on Grant Street by looking for the line of people out front at all hours, patiently waiting for their desserts. I can't comment on their other pastry items, as I've only ever tried the dan tat (egg custard tarts), which is what they're famous for. Rightfully so, as the tarts are very tasty with a nice flaky crust and are usually served warm out the oven.
The store is closed for a month between July and August when the owners go on vacation.

Golden Gate Bakery offers the best chinese baked goods you'll find anywherel, that's assuming you're lucky enough to go there when it's opened. This place is so successful that the staff takes off for months at a time for vacation. When it is opened, the line pours out the door, but it is worth the wait. It is very yummy, very delicious and very fresh. Definately worth checking out if you're in the Chinatown area. Service is also great...well it's better than the other Chinatown bakeries at least.

Its bakery is so goood! I love this place but too bad its located in Chinatown so its harder to get to for me and there are usually HUGE lines there. They have the best cakes. The place is quite small so its almost impossible to eat there peacefully so you mostly get the food to go. The bad thing is that you most likely have to speak chinese and the place is crowded and unorganized.

Golden Gate Bakery is the only bakery in San Francisco's Chinatown that people (including tourists) remember the name of, and that's due to one or two reasons: 1) its baked goods are expensive; and 2) its baked goods are very, very good. Usually, it's the latter. Often, you will find a line that extends outside of this bakery, as that is how well their baked goods sell. You will usually have to wait several minutes to get what you order, even though they make their products non-stop. Their best-selling item is their egg tart, which is currently $0.95 each, but expect it to continue climbing the way it has for years now. In most cases, people purchase these egg tarts by the dozens, and the one time that I only ordered four of them, the lady asked me if there was a reason why I was ordering so few. THAT is how good their baked goods sell.
