Why settle for an imitation of this classic -- a fast-food "breakfast sandwich" -- when you can have the real thing? Pain au jambon for $2.95 -- is a meal in itself. Tartine pastry is the epitome of flakiness, the gruyere is tangy, and the ham smoky and slightly sweet.
Of course that is just one of many items from their menu. Regular croissants, quiche, bread pudding, scones, morning buns, pain au chocolate, and museli. Just a few of the items there. Lots of pressed sandwiches too.
Those are just some of the savory items. For sweets ... don't even get me started. Two of them are irresistable: their eclairs and the lemon-meringue cake.
Has anyone been to their restaurant on Valencia Street?

Hi Dora,
When I lived in SF, Tartine was my favorite bakery. They have a great selection of sweet and savory items and I was a regular there on weekend mornings.
Some of my favorite items were:
Morning Rolls: Orange cinammon, gooey heavenly delights. Only downside - they run out quickly. These are worth every penny and then some.
Savory Bread Pudding: A great bread pudding full of veggies, mushrooms, eggs, and sausage. Absolutely delicious.
You won't go wrong here.

There are the kind of people that are inclined to get religious about their favorite restaurants and cafes. There are the kinds of restaurants and cafes that breed this sort of religiousity. When twain the two meet, it's a beautiful thing indeed. Such a confluence is evidenced at Tartine by the lines out the door every morning of folks waiting for that first hit of coffee and the fact that there's a waiting list for fresh baked loaves of bread on the weekend. Tartine is a French style café with cakes, press sandwiches, buttery croissants, bread pudding. Pure euro indulgence.

The lemon tart is so delicious it's become a staple of celebrations with friends. And this from someone who is not a big fan in general of lemon tarts; it really is that good. All other pastries are great. My only complaint is that it is way too crowded, so I've had much better luck with buying things to go. The sidewalk tables get packed and it's hard to get comfortable. The desserts are worth it, but you might be better off taking them home so you can savor them without having to deal with the crowds.

I really love this place. Tartine only uses the best high quality ingredients in their desserts and baked goods. Fabulous breakfast items, like their morning buns, croissants, scones, and just beautiful desserts. Don't overlook their sandwiches either, my favorite being the prosciutto and gruyere.
The line is usually out the door but it does move pretty fast. You're lucky if you can get a table.

A no-frills bakery where all the attention is focused where it should be: on perfecting the indulgent desserts and coffee drinks. The eclairs, pastries, and tarts are all delectable. I have a friend who buys one of Tartine's chocolate cakes every week! A perfect place to while away a Sunday afternoon during San Francisco's rainy season.

everyone says this is the best bakery in the city, and it is. it is no accident that they have been voted best of san francisco by the weekly multiple times. located at 18th and guerrero, they are so good they don't even need a sign. their pasteries really are unbelievable, and i would even go so far as to say that they are worth the price. and they also have amazing lunches. the tables are always crowded, so be ready to sit outside or go for a walk if you want to wait for one to clear up.

I purchased an eclair at 4:00pm Sunday afternoon. Wasn't expecting the pate a choux (the 'dough') to be great, since it was probably made over 10 hours ago, and they tend to go soggy. It was actually better than expected. But disappointed in the custard filling, which was actually dripping and runny....Then for the chocolate, which was overkill. Mind you, I've eaten dark ScharffenBurger/Valhrona/E Guittard chocolate everyday for the past 3 years (called an addiction!) so I'm no stranger to dark. But the dark chocalate on the eclair was WAY too thick, and then, to top things off, there was a thick dusting of cocoa powder to boot. This was a waste of good chocolate. Save it for some dense chocolate cake/truffles etc. It COMPLETELY overpowered the custard and pate a choux. Why not just make a good TRADITIONAL chocolate eclair??? whats going on here?

OK, if you like scones, morning buns, mochas, or anything else café-related, this is the place for you. This place has it all, and practically every item knocks the socks off of the competition. The only negative is that the line can be out the door and parking can be challenging, but it's all so worth it! If you like sweets, they have those too and have that in spades and use Sharfen Berger chocolate, as well as Valhorona chocolate in their mochas. Their bread pudding is to die for as well. YUMMY!
