I have been to many openings in this gallery and am always impressed with the varied genre' of art they curate, and the artists are always of stellar quality. The wine bar offers a feeling of intimacy and the staff/owners are very chill. I would recommend this gallery to everyone wanting to check out the top notch gallery scene in SOMA.

This place is a very cool oasis tucked within the South of Market nightlife mayhem. The two-floor art gallery alone is worth the visit (the space is gorgeous but without any of the usual art gallery snootiness), and there's the added bonus of a downstairs beer and wine bar. Excellent wine list a great selection of beers and very cool staff. This is the perfect after work chill spot.
Pros: Beautiful space, great beer and wine selection.
Cons: None.

Great space featuring some awesome artists. Compared to 111 Minna
down the street it's a bit smaller and more intimate. The art is contemporary
and covers the gamut of media from painting to sculpture. The patrons also
vary depending on the current show from full-suits to full-body-tatoos. And
I'm always happy with the bartender.

This SoMa space is visually interesting with its contemporary art, a vaulted ceiling, skylights and touches of patinaed steel throughout. Everything from the banisters to the bar is handcrafted, and it shows. The wine bar is tucked into the back corner of the main gallery, while the mezzanine features additional installations and an art library. Not many San Francisco galleries feel as relaxed as Varnish, due in part to its friendly staff, the presence of music (not many galleries play rock) and wine choices.
