we have brought many people visiting from out of town to Alcatraz because it's a nice tour and shows great history in San Francisco. you can get the audio tour for only like $5 so that's pretty reasonable, and you can get totally creeped out if you decide to go at night. I have heard they sometimes have concerts there, too.

I had always been fascinated by the mention of Alcatraz from a very early age. On my first visit to San Francisco I had to go on the tour. I was not disappointed. It was all I had read and heard about it.
Out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, the island of Alcatraz is a world unto itself. isolation is one of the constants of island life for any inhabitant - soldier, guard, prisoner or bird. is a recurrent theme in the unfolding history of Alcatraz. Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. Visitors to the island can not only explore the remnants of the prison. This alone gave you a chilling feeling. In fact my wife ran through to the end. Learn about the Native American occupation of 1969 - 1971, early military fortifications and the West Coast's first (and oldest operating) lighthouse. The island features many natural features as well - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare. These days it is an experience experience, but well worth the money. Ever time I go to S.F. I take more photographs of the island.

If you're looking for a vet who specializes in felines and have a large budget for your cat's medical needs, the Animal Farm Pet Hospital is the place for you. I took my cat here once and walked out with a whopper of a bill. Animal Farm Pet Hospital is soooo expensive, but I must say Dr Diegmann and his staff are crazy for cats and will go to any lengths to keep them going. I can say this with certainty because I have a relative who spent thousands at the Animal Farm Pet Hospital keeping her 20+ year old arthritic cat with heart & kidney problems alive, but if you ask her, she'd say she has no regrets and takes her new cat to him.

The Basic Brown Bear Factory is a place to take your kids to see how teddy bears are made. I went there recently with my young cousins and they thought the tour was fun, and it was free. I got the idea to go there because my cousins love teddy bears, and I remembered visiting this place (when it was known as the Teddy Bear Factory and located elsewhere in SF) as a kid and liking it. If you go in a large group, you would pay $12 to cover the tour of the teddy bear assembly line, a history lesson (how the name "Teddy" was coined), and a build-your-own bear activity (basically you stuff it).

I had some friends from out of town over, and they wanted to see Alcatraz. I realized that even though I grew up in San Francisco, I hadn't seen it before either. So we quickly booked a tour through Blue and Gold Fleet. It was only about $60 for four people, and it was a really fun tour. The commentary is pretty educational without being boring. The only thing that might bother people is that there's a hike up to the cellhouse, and its really tiring. Good exercise, though, and there is an hourly shuttle for those who aren't up to it.

Candlestick Park has changed its name to 3Com Park a few years back and has recently changed again to Monster Park because of different ownership. The 49ers football team plays at Monster Park and thousands and thousands of fans come out to see them play. The arena is a very beautiful place even if it's changed ownership and is older than PacBell Park, the baseball stadium. The Giants actually played in Monster Park before receiving a park of their own so there has been a lot of sport history at the park.

For a fun, out of ordinary date, I went to the Tactile Dome and had a great time. I've been to the Exploratorium many times and always enjoyed myself. So if you're into science and discovery and learning, this is a great place to spend an afternoon.

Golden Gate Park is not only beautiful, but it's got tons of amenities. There is the herd of buffalo (believe it or not!), Stowe Lake where you can rent paddle boats and row boats, the museums (De Young, Asian Art, Academy of Sciences when it is remodeled), the Japanese Garden, the botanical garden, so many kids playgrounds, soccer fields, the Tulip Garden, the windmills, the Beach Chalet, Children's Playground (they say this is the oldest something -- you'll have to read the sign yourself!) and my favorite, the Shakespeare Garden where I got engaged!

The Japanese Tea Garden is located in Golden Gate Park. It is very beautiful there, especially in the spring time. It's very relaxing to take a stroll around there. I love walking up and down the Japanese bridge next to the zen garden. Admission is also very cheap, only 3.50. It is definitely a great place to spend some time relaxing during the weekend.

I absolutely love the Lamp Shop! I almost never buy anything because it can be a bit pricey but I love going here to get ideas of things that I want and to give other people hints of what to get me. It is really large so they have everything you could ever want. This one is always really clean and it is pretty easy to find someone to help you if you need it. It can be really crowded on the weekends but if you happen to be there when it's not crowded it is a really pleasant place to shop with lots of great stuff to choose from.
