I had always been fascinated by the mention of Alcatraz from a very early age. On my first visit to San Francisco I had to go on the tour. I was not disappointed. It was all I had read and heard about it.
Out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, the island of Alcatraz is a world unto itself. isolation is one of the constants of island life for any inhabitant - soldier, guard, prisoner or bird. is a recurrent theme in the unfolding history of Alcatraz. Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. Visitors to the island can not only explore the remnants of the prison. This alone gave you a chilling feeling. In fact my wife ran through to the end. Learn about the Native American occupation of 1969 - 1971, early military fortifications and the West Coast's first (and oldest operating) lighthouse. The island features many natural features as well - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare. These days it is an experience experience, but well worth the money. Ever time I go to S.F. I take more photographs of the island.

Located near the Cliff House, Musee Mecanique has an eclectic collection of vintage coin-operated mechanical games. It’s definitely a blast from the past and you can spend a couple of good hours just figuring out how to work some of the machines. A neat and fun place to visit.

Golden Gate Park is not only beautiful, but it's got tons of amenities. There is the herd of buffalo (believe it or not!), Stowe Lake where you can rent paddle boats and row boats, the museums (De Young, Asian Art, Academy of Sciences when it is remodeled), the Japanese Garden, the botanical garden, so many kids playgrounds, soccer fields, the Tulip Garden, the windmills, the Beach Chalet, Children's Playground (they say this is the oldest something -- you'll have to read the sign yourself!) and my favorite, the Shakespeare Garden where I got engaged!

This is the quintessential pier! When I visited this place I was amazed by the variety of shops and restaurants here. It has Bubba Gump Shrimp, some very good places serving clam chowder, and fast food chains as well. The gift shops are also worth checking out, for they sell everything from bath salts to chocolates. I loved people watching and walking around and smelling the ocean. You'll have a good time!

What a better combination than to have art of roman architecture and science in one palace. The Palace held the artwork for the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition. Now the last remaining structure, it houses multiple experiments glorifying science phenomenons.
The Palace is a wonderful place to photograph. Set in overgrown landscaping and a pond housing wildlife, it is a natural backdrop for scenes in movies, like 'The Rock'. The terracotta columns contrasts very well against the blue sky (day or night). The artisans that built the originals were flown in from Europe. Beautiful, you have to see it and feel it for yourself.

If you're looking for a vet who specializes in felines and have a large budget for your cat's medical needs, the Animal Farm Pet Hospital is the place for you. I took my cat here once and walked out with a whopper of a bill. Animal Farm Pet Hospital is soooo expensive, but I must say Dr Diegmann and his staff are crazy for cats and will go to any lengths to keep them going. I can say this with certainty because I have a relative who spent thousands at the Animal Farm Pet Hospital keeping her 20+ year old arthritic cat with heart & kidney problems alive, but if you ask her, she'd say she has no regrets and takes her new cat to him.

The Japanese Tea Garden is located in Golden Gate Park. It is very beautiful there, especially in the spring time. It's very relaxing to take a stroll around there. I love walking up and down the Japanese bridge next to the zen garden. Admission is also very cheap, only 3.50. It is definitely a great place to spend some time relaxing during the weekend.

This bowling center is very convenient. Although there are not many lanes, the wait is not too long. I had a great time here and they gave me a free game next time I went. The prices were a little high but not out of reach. They have food available and also a mini arcade. The employees were very easy to work with and friendly.

More
A couple of weeks I took my cats, Red and Felix in to get groomed at The Best Little Cat House in Pasadena. Red is a flame point HImalayan with lots of long beautiful fur. The only problem is that he gets hairballs from cleaning himself, and it's hard to keep him from getting matted. The lady that groomed him gave him a cool summer haircut. He came home with about an inch of hair and is still strutting his stuff. I think he feels better because he's cooler in the heat, and he must think he looks pretty good too. He's even nicer to our friends when they come over. He actually goes up to them and asks to be pet, which he never did before. Go figure!
Felix is a short haired black and white cat. He used to shed so much hair no matter what clothes we wore his hair showed up. Well the nice lady at the Cat House fixed him all up. She did something called a "shed control" and now my wife and I can go out to a nice dinner without being spotted a mile away as cat owners.
By the way, they also have super luxurious cat boarding. They have 2 playrooms where the cats never have to be put in cages. I was really impressed at how relaxed they all seemed, and everybody got along so well. They also have private rooms if you don't want your cat to socialize. My kids had so much fun playing with all the cats I could hardly get them out of there, even when I tried to bribe them with ice cream.

For a fun, out of ordinary date, I went to the Tactile Dome and had a great time. I've been to the Exploratorium many times and always enjoyed myself. So if you're into science and discovery and learning, this is a great place to spend an afternoon.
