For a period of time in college, the American Red Cross Student Association at UCSD held a weekly route for Mama's Kitchen. It was a great opportunity for students to take some time away from their busy study schedules and give back to the community. Mama's Kitchen provides food deliveries for individuals who cannot obtain their own due to debilitation from AIDS. They rely on their volunteers to make this possible, so do try to commit to something long term!

On any given day, after school of course, you can find kids break dancing inside or surfing the web. Then, they can munch of a meal there for a pretty good price as well. Since it is run by Harmonium, you'll always see kids working there weather it is behind the counter at the cafe or in the record store. Then at nights, the center turns an All-age venue that fits around 600 kids. You might not get the best acts in the world but you'll rarely find a concert ticket to be over 12 bucks. This seems to be the hang out for many Mira Mesa kids. Rocker and Hip Hop

More
Child Abuse Prevention Foundation is a great resource to any parent. They can provide free materials on Child Abuse and how to detect if your child is being abused. Abuse can happen not just from your spouse but from older teenagers in the house as well. They also have Family Counselors for very small prices , they also will do it for free if you can prove you do not get enough money to pay for it.
Child Abuse Prevention Foundation is a great resource. But only use it if you really need it.

More
LLS has so many great programs to help fund cancer research, and all the money stays in San Diego county for patients and local research! You can join an endurance event and train with LLS's Team in Training for a bicycle ride (100 miles) a triathlon or a marathon. the program is designed to take you from the couch to the finish line and also accommodates other abilities. I cannot think of a better way to stay (or get) healthy than to have the support of them as we raise funds for cancer research. For much less than the price of a gym membership I can (and do) make a difference!
Join up! I am doing America's most Beautiful Bike ride in Lake Tahoe next!

More
The Access Center, is one of a network of hundreds of Independent Living Centers throughout California and the nation.
Independent living is a relatively new concept, articulated quite well by Adolph Ratzka:
"Independent Living is a philosophy and a movement of people with disabilities who work for self-determination, equal opportunities and self-respect. Independent Living does not mean that we want to do everything by ourselves, do not need anybody, or that we want to live in isolation."
Independent Living means that we demand the same control in our everyday lives that our non-disabled brothers and sisters, neighbors, and friends take for granted. We want to grow up in our families, go to the neighborhood school, use the same bus as our neighbors, work in jobs that are in line with our education and abilities, and start families of our own. Just as everybody else, we need to be in charge of our lives, and think and speak for ourselves

More
Harnish House is a wonderful retirement community that definitely has the feel of something much different. Indepence is encouraged here, and each unit comes with a full kitchen, though there are meals available in the community center for those who cannot always prepare meals for themselves. The building is very secure, and the grounds are immaculate, with gardens and flowers for the people living there to tend to. Planting and gardening are encouraged, and there are other activities right at the center for people to actively participate in, including fitness, tennis and swimming.

Working at the Neighborhood House has been incredibly rewarding. I do work only on the weekends, about once a month, and have done everything from cleaning to grocery shopping and taking people on outings. Neighborhood House is a shelter that, like most, depends largely on the generosity of volunteers. They are incredibly organized and accomodating to your schedule, and when you can come in and help. I called them and was pleased to find that they had things seperated very specifically by time. This made it easier to know right away if I would be able to work with my schedule and volunteer there.
