By the name, people probably think this is just an Asian art museum, but it’s more than that. Of course they have some traditional Asian art, but they also have some contemporary art. The most amazing thing is that the contemporary art are from artists who take traditional objects and present them in ways that make the art contemporary. For example, right now they have on display wood, paper, and bamboo, all traditional objects, but the artist display it in such a way that it's contemporary art. Worth a visit.

This museum is interesting in that it has both traditional and contemporary art. In one room, you may see polynesian dolls; in another room, you might see amorphous glass. On my recent visit their, a docent was helpful in explaining the contemporary art. One Japanese artists had taken a log and sliced it in thousands of pieces, but displayed the log with all the slices in place. Each slice was paper thin. The log was simultaneously whole and in thousands of pieces. Definitely worth a visit to see the diversity in art and origins.

Mingei means "art of the people." The Mingei International Museum is an arts and crafts museum in Balboa Park. Right now some of their exhibits include a jewelry exhibit, a Japanese doll exhibit, a furniture exhibition and a sculpture exhibition. They also have a super cool gift shop that you should check out anytime you are at Balboa Park. This museum helps you think about stuff that you don't usually think about too much.
