If you are a fan of model railroads, or just a big kid at heart that loves trains, you need to visit this museum. Located in beautiful scenic Balboa Park, the Train Museum is fun for the entire family.
Last time I visited there was a train on the grounds that you could ride and of course the museum is very educational. Make an interesting day and visit all the museums in the area while you're here.
Definitely a museum to take the kids.

I like this place. It has a lot of information and model railroads. The only downsides I see are it is in Balboa Park so sometimes parkling is not easy to find and the museum is a bit small. I suggest going there on one of their free days (call for the info on that) and if you like it become a member or go back again with friends or relatives o a paid day.

I think this is a fun place to bring kids that like trains and building railroads, and adults will find it really interesting as well. They have very extensive miniature displays set up in a series of large areas, in different scales. The railroads and cityscapes are pretty elaborate and are all related to San Diego city and railroad history. An hour will cover this museum, and there's plenty of other things to see in Balboa park.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this museum. Model trains aren't really my thing but the museum was actually kind of cool. I guess it can be a lot of fun to learn about new things! People come in to work on the exhibits twice a week and on those nights you can enter the museum free and watch the work. This museum is a fun place to spend a couple of hours and the highest admission price you will ever pay is $5.

I personally was not too intrigued by the idea of a train museum, but this place was actually pretty cool. The designs and models were very cool, and the detail put into each piece of work is amazing. I did get bored after a while, but I usually do for most museums. IMO, great thing to try once.

This is a great half day trip for little kid and big kids who like trains. I've watch two and three year old kids who will watch the train for hours.
There is a larger train display (largest size model railroad track) that I think was well done. It had many trains packed into a smaller display area with more flashing lights and sounds than the other displays. Especially interesting is that they had one train that had a video camera on the front that would display to monitors around the room. This is the best model for the littlest kids.
The older children who still like trains will also enjoy the scale model displays of southwest landscape. Very well done.
