Great overall dining experience! I may be biased because I absolutely love Italian food, however this charming restaurant met all of my expectations. The menu had so many delicious looking dishes but the friendly and knowledgeable server helped us narrow down our options. We skipped the appetizer since Italian food is pretty heavy and we wanted to save room for dessert. I ordered the gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce which was light and creamy. My boyfriend ordered the filet mignon topped with blueberry sauce. We were both hesitant about trying it since we weren?t sure how blueberry sauce would compliment red meat, but hats off to the chef and the server for recommending such an outstanding dish! Finally, we wrapped up our meal with the flourless chocolate cake and the cheesecake which were the perfect end to our meal. Both were more moderate portions and light in texture so we didn?t walk out feeling uncomfortably full. Overall it was a really positive experience and I will definitely be returning to Acqua Al 2 in the future!

San Diego has waited a long time for a restaurant like this. I would ignore the few mediocre ratings posted by others. It's evident by their posts they aren't used to dining in a fine dining establishment. In some ways this restaurant is above and beyond what most individuals in San Diego are familiar with. I lived there from 1997-2004, and am very familiar with the options. This experience is very similar to dining at a restaurant in NYC, London, Vegas, or San Francisco. Fine dining is about impeccable service, quality over quantity, and expert wines. This restaurant has all of those. The food was presented beautifully and was delicious. The staff were friendly and professional. We travel to Napa every October and are very familiar with wines and were very impressed with the selection. They has several of our favorites. I'd actually say compared to the French Laundry which we ate at last year, this restaurant has better service, better quality food, and is less costly. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing which came to around $300, while our tasting menu at the French Laundry was $800! Definitely worth it if you have the income. If you are on a budget and looking for large portions, I agree, try Cheesecake factory. I would pay this price for ambiance and food any day over the mediocre restaurants in the Gaslamp.
Pros: ambiance, food, service, wine list
Cons: none

The patio dining out back makes the place two entirely different experiences. Inside it tends to be busy and musical and bustling -- all white and candle glow, but outside it is quieter and cool and dark. There are three things on the menu that I love: Tuscan Seafood pasta with squid ink linguini, the chicken florentine, and the stuffed mushroom appetizer. Get a bottle of wine, two entres and a shared dessert and you'll only go over a hundred bucks if you tip thirty percent.
Check out the website for prices and directions. www.alexanderson30th. com Though I wasn't so impressed in May when I tried it the first time, the last two times, they have been friendly and fast. There is ample parking on Upas behind the building and they do take reservations now.

This restaurant doesn't look like much compared to its neighbors in Hillcrest, but it's a hidden jewel. It is hardly ever packed so you never have to wait long for the freshly made, authentic Greek food. The dinners are large, so go hungry. They have great sandwiches for lunch too. Don't pass up the opportunity to eat here.

I love going here for their Minestrone soup on a perfect day... Everything on the menu is delicious, even the bread that they give to begin with. It's on one of the popular streets for Hillcrest!
