I saw the Academy Is along with We The Kings last month. It was a lot of fun. No audio mess up, crowd was awesome, and the bands were rocking! And it didnt feel like an oven in the venue.

The only thing that is missing from the venue is the alcohol. It is one of the only venues in San Diego besides The Jumping turtle and the house of blues that has Metal music. It has an enormous stage and a large area for merch. It feels like a high school gym though and because they are all ages the people there tend to be be underage. There is plenty of parking behind the venue where I have seen various people ralphing in the lot before going into the show.
I would recommend if you are over 21 to try to see whatever band is coming to soma at the house of blues or the jumping turtle. they have smaller stages but there are adults there not a bunch of kids. But if you are a kid or the band is not coming anywhere else in San Diego it still is a really good venue.
The sound is good, air quality is good, no seating except along the walls and on the stairs leading out of the floor. it is just a wideopen warehouse with a big stage. The kids that are there tend to stand in front of the stage and talk on their phone or to eachother if the band they want to hear is not on. very highschool feeling going on there. I am used to adults letting others get in front if they like the band and step back if you do not like the band so the fans of the band can have a good time. but they are kids so i guess they havent learned manners yet. I would not mind if they were throwing eachother around or even fighting when a band they were not into was on. But even when there are like 100 people who like the band the rest overwhelmingly make it uncomfortable because they are talking or ignoring the band.
I would suggest standing in the back and just watching instead of being bothered with a bunch of kids talking and acting cool ignoring the bands.

I wouldn't say this place is for music lovers at all. Yes you can find bands like modest mouse and bright eyes but most of the times, you are stuck with ridiculous hardcore acts and emo whinny kids. I think the venue can be better ran because the owner seems like a punk when he goes on stage and preaches before a show. I feel like im entering a prison when i get in because of its beat down atmosphere.

I saw a Death Cab for Cutie concert here. It surprised me that it was in the corner of a tiny ugly looking plaza. The place was medium sized to my surprise. It looked like a factory with a stage in front. The prices for concerts differ, but I thought $20 was a fair deal for a concert.

The Soma is a great little operation that hosts concerts in comparatively small spaces. Local and small visiting bands play here for admission prices that are a great deal. It's a favourite spot for a lot of high school and college students. I've been to their larger room to see Switchfoot and a smaller room for a concert put on by a medley of smaller bands. Souvenir stands are usually set up in the lobby throughout the evening so fans can buy merchandise to support their favourite musicians.

SOMA is home to a lot of touring national acts. The building is in a strip mall and the actual place is a converted movie theater. Not much attention was paid to the acoustic, while the sound system is decent, the building wasn't ever really remodelled to upgrade it. There are a lot of bands that play here and the clientele is mostly high school age thru mid twenties.
