Mid-Century Design is located on Park Blvd right next door to the coffee shop and cafe... which makes it a good place to window shop if you are killing time waiting for friends to show up.
The store is pretty small in terms of square feet, but they definitely pack (or should I say "stack"?) a lot in there. All the kitschy, hip mid-century stuff that either looks as if it belongs in an architectural catalog (here's looking at you, Eames) or an Austin Powers set is the sort of style you'll find here. Turnover seems to be pretty quick, so you can check in here every few weeks to see if they have anything that meets your needs. If you don't see what you're looking for, the owner will take down your name and number and give you a shout if he finds a piece and brings it into the store.
Prices here, while not amazingly cheap by any means, are pretty reasonable. Mid-century seems to be all the rage now, so the price tags seem to have likewise shot up. Every time I've been in here (that's many!), the staff have been nice and friendly. I ended up buying two chrome lamps that I have been very pleased with, and continue to check back to see if they have the elusive table of my dreams.

Opium has a small storage room on 30th/Fern and we were walking by one day and spotted these interesting cathedral-like stained glass room dividers, so we decided to go to the store on Market to scope them out.
I originally thought they were antique, but after talking to the store owner, he told me that they have them custom designed by their artisans (and modeled after an antique piece) in Indonesia. In fact, all of their furniture is made and imported from Indonesia. So none of that generic, chain retailer stuff from them...and best of all, it's actually real wood! They can even do custom orders with your specifications too, and while this is not entirely rare, the fact that the prices are so reasonable makes it rare indeed.
They have a good selection of dining tables, bookshelves, and sideboards, as well as a number of interesting accoutrements that would make beautiful gifts. Staff is very friendly.

I'll first say the 2 girls working for Ms. Stankaitas are good people and don't belong there. I imagine they stay because they need work. I paid $2500 deposit for a " professional design" program. It's stated these funds will be used against future orders. That's turned out to be flat cr*p. She kept that above the pieces ordered . I needed 2 rooms done fairly swiftly, but expected class. Her showroom looks good, but I learned her actions are sleazy w/ integrity missing. She can't design- the items didn't fit. She's a blamer; she'd blame all her mistakes (perhaps due to too much wine, along with her whining) on either her employees or the customer. As an adult, I was shocked that she would try to humiliate her people in front of customers. I'd be gone if she didn't have my "deposit". She repeatedly mis-ordered, poorly designed and demanded final payment for goods that were months late but not rcvd. When goods arrived, they weren't even what was ordered ,but she refused to refund. She recommends "a great worker that's been helpful to me" as a painter, but neglects to say it's her son who's just as sleezy. He broke two items in my home and tried to hide it, when here to give me bid. It was a paint store that let me know it was her kid. They won't sell this man paint anymore. Finally, I cut m losses (big ones) rather than deal with her anymore. Our family is disgusted. I'd go to court, but we're dealing w/ cancer , which is why we looked for outside help. There's plenty of free designer help at quality stores. I thought I was doing good by trying to support local business. Stay clear of her (and sons) or be ready for dark days and loss. I really believe she has both mental and moral problems. By the way, I checked reviews first. The good ones, I later learned were written by her sons, boyfriend and old employee.
