FACT:
Pet shops usually buy their puppies from brokers. These brokers get their animals from puppy mills –
commercial breeding establishments that mass-produce dogs for resale. Most puppy mills and brokers are
in the Midwest Pennsylvania and New York. Neither puppy mills nor pet shops properly socialize their puppies. They raise their puppies in tight
and often cramped dirty cages – not warm home-enriched environments.
In these conditions they lack the benefits of fresh air, exercise, play with lots of positive human contact all of basic necessities that every puppy needs to be able to grow into a well-adjusted adult dog.
FICTION:
Being USDA LICENSED is not necessarily a good thing. This usually means that you are breeding a LARGE amount of puppies and therefore this is the definition of puppymill.
Jumping off the high horse and onto the soap box.

It's a shame that a lot of people who decide to use this forum are mostly uninformed whiners who love to complain about what a terrible job everyone else is doing. It also seems these pet owners don't assume ANY responsibility when something does go wrong. I'm not trying to stick up for any particular pet store, but there are always 2 sides to every story. Most people don't have a clue about proper animal care and all the things that CAN AND DO happen, WITHOUT human negligence.
All vets aren’t on the up and up either. They are a business too and will take advantage of people just like some mechanics do. They know you have limited knowledge. It’s easier for them to blame a store and scare you so they can rack up some fees.
Private breeders, hobby breeders and backyard breeders are no better than anyone else. In fact, they are more likely to be less knowledgeable and less prepared than LICENSED breeders. Most breeders are not licensed. Even if they tout fancy registrations or champion dogs, it doesn't mean they are licensed, and I don't mean a kennel license.
As for the purebred/mixed breed, mistakes will be made. If quality control isn’t optimal, things like that are going to happen. Meaning, absolute measures must be taken to ensure the breeding stock is in a controlled environment, and that this boy can’t “hop the fence” and mate with that girl when someone’s not looking. I doubt that those types of errors are intentional.
Really, people need to have a clue before shooting their mouth off and thinking they are so much better or would be able to do any better. Nothing in life is perfect. There are pros and cons to everything. Breeders, licensed kennels, shelters, rescue facilities….they all have something to contend with; something some whiner will take issue with. Don’t like it? Don’t go there, don’t use it. Why can’t you just keep your negativity to yourself and get down off your high horse.

I have been a customer for over 14 years. The store used to be my go to place. As of today, May 2009 I will never step foot in that store and will tell everyone I meet not to go there either. The quality of service has gone down. The quality of pets has gone down. The puppy room is deplorable and the store is now only filled with a bunch of teenagers who are not knowledgeable in the care of animals. Management is bad. I bought a Maine Coon kitten in January 2009 after numerous vet visits, medications, treatments etc. we just had to put him down on Saturday. His name was Wakefield and he had F I P. A fatal virus that comes from cats that are kept in catteries and exposed to other cats feces. I also bought a very expensive "Yorkshire Terrier" or so I thought. Turns out he is not a Yorkie, but instead a Yorkie Mix. This is either a case of false advertising or them not checking where they got their puppy. His "bogus papers" list Hunte Corporation as the broker and Karen Gathright as the breeder. I called to let them know about the kitten and they pretty much didn't care. I will never shop there again and I will tell everyone I know not to shop there either.

It's either dog poop or money. Either way, Seaworld must like the smell of both. The smell of the store hits you on the way in and the prices of the puppies are off the hook! Bought a puppy for $1K and within 3 weeks, we've been to the vet 3 times. The little guy was dehydrated, had to be put on antibiotics, and eats his own poop. Next time we'll look for a local breeder. Never heard about Hunte Corporation until I checked them out on the web. Poor little thing - I think he has PTSD. He's been thru the puppy version of GITMO.

I USED TO WORK THERE, THEY DIDN'T CARE AT ALL ABOUT CLEANINESS. THEY ALSO DO GET THERE PUPPIES FROM MILLS, IT TOOK ME A GOOD YEAR TO GET THAT TRUTH FROM THEM. I WAS MORE ABOUT WHAT THE CUSTOMER WANTED, I WASN'T GOING TO PUSH A PUPPY ON THEM AND HAVE THAT PUP END UP IN A SHELTER OR SOMETHING BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T REALIZE THE WORK INVOLVED WITH AN ANIMAL. THEY USED TO TRY TO GET ME TO PUSH IT ONTO THE CUSTOMERS. THERE HAVE BEEN DEAD PUPPIES FROM BEING SICK, THAT WE HAD TO BLEACH AN ENTIRE ROOM. IT'S AWFUL. THE ONLY THING THAT I LIKED WAS THAT THEY DID CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS. BUT WITH OWNER A BUISNESS AND WORKING IN ONE, IT TAKES MORE THAN CARING. I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW FILTHY THE BACK ROOMS ARE WHERE THE SICK PUPS ARE KEPT AND THE NEW ONES THAT COME IN BEFORE THEIR VET CHECK. THEY OVERWORK THE NEW PEOPLE THAT COME IN AND THE REST SIT AROUND AND DO NOTHING.THEY ARE VERY UNPROFESSIONAL PEOPLE. I WORKED MY BUT OFF THERE AND GOT NO RESPECT. TO SUM THIS UP I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE GOING TO SEAWORLD PET CENTER BECAUSE OF THERE DISGUSTING STORE, UNPROFFESIONAL WORKERS AND UNKNOWLEDGABLE, AND ALSO FOR THE FACT THAT THEY GET THEIR PUPPIES FROM A MILL CALLED HUNTZ. YOU WOULD JUST BE BETTER OFF GOING TO A BREEDERS HOME AND SEEING THE ANIMALS CARE WITH YOUR OWN EYES.

Yes, they are big, and yes, they carry a wide variety of pet products and animals. HOWEVER, they're all about quantity, not quality. Most advanced pet-keepers seem to share the same opinion about them. They're a good store for beginners, but not if you're serious. Their fish are always ill, either injured or infected with bacteria/fungus/parasite. They say they have a 7-day warranty, but they will try everything to blame the animal's death on you (rather than admitting that it was sick to begin with), to try to get out of giving you your money back. And the seemingly knowledgeable staff in the freshwater fish section are often clueless, and are always very rude and look down on the customers. Bottom line: they're a money-making facility that cares very little about their animals and even less about their customers. I wish they'd shape up or ship out. Wouldn't miss them at all.

In my opinion, Sea World Pet Center in Salem NH is an abomination! I made the mistake of going into their store in hopes of finding something for my turtle that I wasn't finding anywhere else and the only thing that I left with was a heart filled with sadness and disgust. Not only does Sea World Pet Center keep their animals in areas that are much too small for their needs, but they also aren't kept clean to the point where they actually smell up the entire place. I will never set foot in their store again, after what I saw the last time I was there. Near the bunny display there were maybe 100+ baby mice in a TINY tank with at least 4 adult mice.. most of the babies were clearly dead. The whole place smelled of death, and my heart literally broke at what I saw. Anyway, I would not recommend anyone to Sea World Pet Center, because I don't see how the animals can be very healthy at all living in an environment like that.

Sea World Pets is a large pet and supply retailer -- over 11,000 items to choose from. Sea World carries all types of small animals (hamsters, ferrets, etc.), aquarium fish (fresh and salt water, reptiles, birds, puppies and kittens. There are asiles and asiles of supplies and accessories. I used to go there for fresh-water fish and supplies, but I found that their stock was sometimes questionable, though they always had great deals on stock and a wide, interesting selection to choose from. They also had a lot of accessories and tank decorations that you'd be unable to find elsewhere, but they tended to be a bit expensive.
