The conservatory is a large glass building with many tropical plants. You can see lilies there at Easter, very pretty. I know many people get their wedding pictures taken there. The zoo is free, and has a good selection of animals. There is a great ape building. I like to go there because if my three year old gets tired and we have to leave I don't feel like I wasted my money.

Como Zoo and conservatory offer a great place for a romantic date, or a day with the family. The conservatory is great for a grey or cold day pick-me-up, with the abundant colors and textures and smells of exotic plants and flowers. Even in mid-winter, I can temporarily forget I'm in the frozen tundra of a Minnesota winter in the lush greenhouses. The zoo has a nice layout, with both outdoor and indoor viewing of animals. For the kids, there is Como Town, with rides and fair-like fun for the kids. We were impressed by the professional and courteous employees staffing the rides--they made it feel much safer than a typical traveling ride or carnival.

If you want expensive, go to Apple Valley - this is the real thing. You can see animals and still have money to eat in their new cafeteria, which is awesome and features actual chefs. Yes, the animals have smaller enclosures, but this is one of the only ways for the poor or inner-city kids to see animals. Its a great, diverse crowd. If you want to see some history, check out the OLD monkey house. Now there was confinement! I also highly recommend a trip through the conservatory. I go to both these at least every couple months!

The Como Park Zoo has a nice variety of animals. The catch is they don't have a lot of space and it is pretty much just a lot of animals in cages looking depressed. Once I saw the Polar Bear pacing back and forth in is cage, every time he got to one end he rubbed his nose across the wall, a streak of blood started appearing after a while. It's not a fun zoo to go to. I live nearby and I often see PETA protestors outside of it.
The Conservatory is pretty good though, lots of beautiful plants and it's nice and warm in the winter.

Como Zoo, near Como Lake is a great family zoo. The animals aren't lacking and the food vendors are everywhere. In fact, I would recommend this over the Minnesota Zoo. There are more animals (that you can see) and its free. PLus you don't have to walk that far from place to place. There are also free seal show and a nice little gift shop. This is a great family place to go to.
