The Saint Louis Art Museum located in Forest Park in St. Louis has more than 100 galleries. The building was designed by architect Cass Gilbert as the Palace of Fine Arts for the 1904 World's Fair in Forest Park. Standing atop Art Hill, it is the "crown" jewel" of the 1,370-acre park. This museum seems to go one forever-room after room! Admission is FREE! This is not an art gallery...certainly there are many paintings and drawings to see...but, there are many artifacts dating back thousands of years. There truly is something for everyone here. I wouldn't recommend this for small, tired children. I would do this first-with the promise of the zoo to follow! A beautiful building, respectable and diverse collection of art, good travelling exhibits... and all for free. What more could you want? St. Louis is lucky to have such a treasure. If you have time on a second or third visit don't forget the basement level. There are a lot of interesting and unusual items there: folk art, ethnic art, furniture, glasswork. Each work reveals so much about its culture.

The best way to see the St. Louis Art Museum (and really any large museum) is to pick a few things you want to see and go straight for those. Visiting again and again, you'll eventually see everything, but trying to do it all your first visit is a mistake because of the vast and diverse nature of the place.
The staff are always very helpful and can direct you to what you like or what you are in the mood to see. The museum brings in a number of excellent special exhibits, which often have an entry fee, but there is always a time set aside for free viewing. You'll have to deal with crowds on those days, but it's often worth the trouble if you couldn't normally afford the admission.

St Louis Art Museum is a great place to visit. It has free admission and 3 floors of wonderful things to see. I really don't know much about art at all but I love going here and spending hours looking around. They really do have a lot of thing to see. My favorite is the mummy. I remember going to see it when I was little know I take my kids to see it. It really is a beautiful place to visit.

The building itself is beautiful but inside they definitely have something for everyone. As a novice, I enjoy browsing the 3 different floors of the museum. The artwork is from all different periods and they have a real mummy that everyone, especially children, enjoy.

Located in the beautiful Forest Park, near St. Louis Zoo. I am not much of an art person. but i had to take an art history course one year which required museum visit. I was genuinely surprised by the collection the Art museum has. I was able to use them as reference from my papers. Inside of the museum is ok, i think. Outside is magnificent- the monuments and etc.

It's located in the beautiful Forest Park area. Once inside, the displays are lovely and thought provoking. The museum has several floors filled with art from various eras and from different countries of the world.

I am no art critic, so I am not in a position to judge the merit of the art in the St. Louis Art Museum. However, I have found this museum in general to be well-organized and low-key, with minimal crowds allowing plenty of time to slowly peruse their wide variety of art (although I have to admit, I cannot help but think that the modern art is often funnier than it was intended to be...call me uncultured, but a suit on a hanger is nothing short of amusing). Take a day and take your time, and make sure to work your way through to out-of-the-way exhibits, which are just as much worth your time as the ones near the front.
