Shiitake is Clayton's take on Japanese. It has what I call "foo foo sushi"... rolls with mango sauce, etc. and the portions are VERY small (plus there is no al la carte sushi) and only moderate in quality. The rest of the food was good though as was the ambiance. The side of asparagus and mushrooms was GREAT. We had four different desserts and all were very good. So... if you want sushi go somewhere else. If you want a great non-sushi meal, this is the place.
Pros: Ambiance, Non-Sushi Items, Desserts
Cons: Sushi

My girlfriend and I have been trying all of the sushi places in St. Louis over the last month and heard Shitake was a good bet. We had a celebration and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately the service was horrible. Our server forgot our appetizer plates, then didnt bring spoons with our soup and we couldnt get his attention for about 10 minutes, then the sushi was twice the price for half the quality of other restaurants in the area and the platter was missing an item. To top it all off our server forgot our drink order and never brought them out. So each and every portion of the meal had a problem. One plus was that the spring role appetizer was very tasty but from there everything else was down hill and not even close to worth the price.
Pros: Atmosphere, Location
Cons: Service, Sushi

I just moved to St. Louis from L.A. and was eager to go out for a great Asian meal. At Shiitake, the sushi was horrible, very dry, crumbly, and with the thinnest, lightest pink tuna I have ever seen. The maguro sushi was $4.00 a piece!! The unagi was also dry. They charge almost $3.00 for the smallest bowl of edemame! I paid $10 for pot stickers that were tiny, flat, mushy, swimming in sauce, and tasted like frozen Chung King egg rolls. The $20 lobster pad Thai was a very small portion and was almost the consistency of soup. The cosmo and the saki were decent. We left hungry and out $100 for two people. Do not expect Asian at it's finest.
Pros: good sake, good drinks
Cons: expensive, horrible sushi, not really Asian food

My taste and visual senses were both extremely satisfied. We sampled two appetizers, a soup, two entrees and a dessert. All were excellent. The favorite was a grilled halibut on sticky rice, with eggplant, shiitake mushrooms and a wasabi aioli sauce. It was outstanding. All of the dishes were presented beautifully. Our service was good -- the server improved as the meal progressed. It was an exceptional evening.
Pros: Outstanding food, Tasteful ambience, Great presentation

Having visited Shiitake three times, each with varying number of guest between 2 and 8, I have found the food and service consistent and worth repeat visits! The appetizers are all good, and the side dishes are a must try (esp the string beans). Though I have not had the sushi, I hear it tastes as great as the presentation. The Lobster Pad Thai is what really has me coming back. I found the service friendly and knowledgeable (esp if you want to know if something can be made without meat or peanuts or hold the spice). No requests were turned down (sign of a great kitchen). Also - very clean and comfortable setting.
Pros: Inventive Menu, Good Accoustics
