My last visit to Zelda's last week and was a good as the first time, 20 years ago. The place inside is still dark and has booths that ara little uncomfortable after sitting a while, but the food it worth it. For first timers I would highly recommend the combination. A nice mix of toppings, and two pieces will fill you up. For those wanting to be adventures, the pesto pizza is just as yummy. Add a cheep pitcher of beer, and you can not find a better meal in town.

Seriously though, how can anyone call this pizza. The staff are rude. Yes, they are a small business, but there's no reason to be stand-offish or just plain rude. I'm there to give you my money. The personal pizzas are 8 dollars and are like small personal pan pizzas from pizza hut ($5). The pizza sauce is more like home-made spaghetti sauce than traditional italian pizza sauce. It was completely inedible and it looked terrible too. The only good thing about zelda's is the old-school 60-70s decor. all that was missing were the brown plastic cups that used to be so common back then. stay away from this place. if you need pizza, it would be in your best interest to travel a little further or if you have to go with roundtable.

Today, I take the pizza home and leave the bartender for the single women.
The pizza still tastes great and the price and time to prepare it is worth every penny and bite.
The place is downtown so parking on the street is not easy.

If you aren't prepared for the Zelda's experience you might be a bit taken aback. Just walk in with patience and an open mind. Take it all in. Observe the retro stone walls and the dark lattice dividing wall with the christmas lights. Let the old timey italian posters sink in. Let the watresses give you a bit of sass and don't take anything personally. Think about all the history, all the stories that the walls of Zelda's would tell if they could speak. Remember that the staff is not there to hold your hand and stroke your ego, they're there to make you the best damned pizza you've ever had. And fully expect to exercise a lot the next day to burn off those calories!
Pros: Delicious Pizza
Cons: steep learning curve

I used to live downtown and we would frequent Zelda's Pizza when we were in the mood for a sit-down pizza place. The place looks like it is a bar with a divide in the room and dining tables added to the area where you'd normally see pool tables. Whenever we have walked in, the host has usually been less than gracious. One time we walked in and the host had her back to us kinda hunched over the front desk there, she lifts her head and glances back over her shoulder ... sees us ... then lowers her head back down and mumbles "how many?" with her back to us as if she were talking to her front desk ... barely audible ... and then she turns around seemingly annoyed and goes "HOW MANY?". It was hard to tell if she was putting on a show or not ... like intentionally being rude to be funny. Each time we went there, the wait was about 45 minutes for the pizza. I think one of the best knee-slappers we had there was when my then roommate asked for a refill on his soda and the waitress looked at him and straight faced said "you don't want to spoil your appetite" and didn't get him a refill! Never sat at the bar, so that may be a different experience, I don't know.
Overall, don't expect the friendliest service, but it's one of the few places in Sacramento to go for good deep dish pizza.
Pros: Good Deep Dish Pizza
Cons: Comically Bad Service, Long Waiting Time

Friends and I from UC Davis used to go to Zelda's on Thursday nights. After a couple of months the staff actually became friendly! My favorite is the pesto pizza, especially the crust. I'm not a pizza expert, but this is THE BEST PIZZA I've ever had. I eat so much I almost get sick, I just can't stop. Whenever I'm in Northern Cal, I make a stop at Zelda's. Pass on the "salad", order ahead, and BRING CASH. If you're too tender and sensitive for the attitude, head to a chain instead where customer service has a higher priority than the food.
