Tonight was our third visit and each time Sophia's Grotto has been a real treat! The chicken dish, the salmon with mustard, the veal medallions, and the pasta dishes are superb. The Boston lettuce salad with raisins and blue cheese is delish. Sonia, the hostess, is welcoming and efficient. The waitstaff is always friendly, and attentive. The drinks are widely varied. Wish there were more dessert selections, but overall a great place to meet friends and enjoy very good food. Sit outside on a warm evening, but inside is fine if weather does not permit.

Sophia's Grotto is a good place to take a date. Its small, so you have to sit close and the plates are pretty small so there are no awkward doggie bags to take home. The food is good but a bit pricey, but like I said, good for a date. Its too fancy to be the kind of place you call in an order or eat at regularly though. The menu has enough quirks to justify the high price tag but it seems more like affectation then daring do. Its only a good restaurant if you score.

Sophia's Grotto is the perfect destination for an evening out. Tucked in the courtyard of 22 Birch St, their only entrance is secluded and gives it an intimate charm we don't find often in our big city. The Grotto offers a wide range of authentic Italian cuisine. My faves are the baby arugula and prosciutto salad followed by the pan seared scallops. Pizzas are always creative and cooked to perfection. Sophia's Grotto carries a full liquor license and their own Grotto Ale (my fave) along with their wine menu which is consistently Divine!! Sophia's offers wine tasting dinners and can accommodate large parties, with a small Italian village atmosphere. Check out SophiasGrotto.com for hours and directions. Bon appetit, and have a very pleasant evening!

I don't know how it is my husband and I have given this place so many shots to impress. Maybe it's because it's always crowded and we're giving the place the benefit of the doubt. But enough is enough. We've been 8 times, 50% of the time it was awful. The first awful time, we literally had to wipe dressing off of a drowned caesar salad to eat it. (Why we didn't send it back, I don't know!) Several times the food has been gratuitously over-salted to the point we swore we'd never be back. And the very last time we went, my husband got a chicken sandwich with fries. The fries were soggy and greasy, obviously undercooked, we literally ate only two. The chicken was puny and charred beyond palatable. We were fed up and finally had the guts to send a dish back at this place. The server did take it off the bill, but then avoided our table the rest of the night. We waited 1/2 hour for the check, paid in cash, and he shorted us ten dollars in change (hopefully an accident). If you're hellbent on going, a safe bet is the Vesuvio pizza. Otherwise, choose one of the neighboring restaurants: The Bistro, Delfino's or Village Sushi.

This restaurant is very warm and inviting. My husband and I had a party of 15 to celebrate his parent's wedding anniversary and all our guests LOVED the food, the service, everything was fabulous. Being that its walking distance from our home we surely visit a lot. Actually valentines day is just around the corner !

What a wonderful addition to Roslindale Village! The restaurant is charming, the owner and staff are very welcoming, and the food is delicious! Sitting outside in the courtyard on a nice warm summer evening, you just can't beat it! A wonderful place to become a "regular" because you'll always feel welcomed! And to that, I say, "Welcome to the Village, Sophia's!" ~Tim.
Pros: Easy to get to, Walking distance, Welcoming owner/staff
