There's always something going on here and for the winter time blues you can't beat taking your kid here. If you are good about getting out there's a resident pass, otherwise Thursday afternoons are donation only (or free to the cheap-os out there). Great stuff for kids of all ages, and look for their special activities, like JIM GILL (but trust me, arrive WAY early for this one!)

This park has SO much to do. Equestian Center and a children's farm and playground equipment for all ages. This is a great day trip for your family! And they do offer classes for riding if you're so inclined. Just a beautiful, often overlooked park. I found that it was great for really small children and they do group tours if your preschool is interested!

Site of the iconic Rockford sculpture, "Symbol," Sinnissippi Gardens offers an award-winning rose garden, a floral clock, a lagoon with swans and ducks, and a greenhouse with seasonal displays (including turtles and birds). Summer is best for strolling or skating along the bike path, and this is a favorite site for dog walking on beautiful Sunday afternoons. Don't miss Rockford's variation on the loch ness monster floating in the Rock River.

More
Tinker Swiss Cottage is a charming house, dating back to 1865. It's a favorite jaunt for local school groups, so try and pick a day when you can look at things without it seeming like a madhouse. This charming house offers so many 19th century treasures and insights into life back then. From mundane chores like ironing to entertaining in the parquet-floored parlor to the production downstairs, there is much to charm you. They maintain a turn-of-the-century garden out back, and a favorite time to visit for everyone is the summertime ice cream social. Don't overlook this museum, even if you saw it back in 4th grade, there's always something new to discover.

As less than an amateur, I love that this course has no sand traps or water holes. It's a hilly course with a few challenging holes. The fees can't be beat. I believe it was only $11 for 9 holes during the week.
