I live in the fan so it is so ridiculous to me that I visted Bacchus for the first time this past week. While this was just my first visit, I am HOOKED! I absolutely loved everything about this restaurant. The wine and food was delicious and the service was excellent. The atmosphere was so very cozy and romantic. I highly reccomend Bacchus, in fact, I am going back this weekend.
Pros: Ambience, Service, Food
Cons: It's the fan, so parking is never that fun. But still worth going!

I too am puzzled to see negative reviews for this restaurant. I've been twice so far - January and October 2007. The first time was frankly one of the best dining experiences ever, thanks mainly to the excellent food, but also to the waiter, a young man in his early twenties who fulfilled the three main requirements of any server: (a) he knew about everything on the menu (b) he managed to convey the impression that we had his undivided attention without crowding us and (c) combined humour with good manners and professionalism. And when I thanked him for helping us to have a really nice evening, he accepted gracefully and was clearly pleased to have helped us. But back to the food. It was excellent - one of those meals you just don't want to end. Shrimp starter and sea bass entree if I recall. Just delicious. And the chocolate mousse was delicious too. The atmosphere is very - well, atmospheric, due to the dramatic lighting and high ceiling. I went again on the strength of that first experience, and even though they'd taken the sea bass off the menu, it was just as good (not such a great evening for me personally because I was alone, however). I'd recommend it - in fact I'm just going there again right now (March 08)
Pros: The food. The waiter. The atmosphere.
Cons: Nothing really.

I went with 2 friends. After you get past the steep climb up what appears to be a back door stairwell and go past the broom and dust pan on the door, you burst into dining room with nice small bar, small tables, and a few longer tables in middle surrounded by brick walls. Call ahead or you’ll sit at the bar for 15 minutes waiting for a table on weekdays and lots more on weekends. The natives are friendly and it is nice to catch up with real people.
We had a wonderful 2004 Barolo which we opened at the bar and enjoyed with the meal. Excellent bread greeted us at the table with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The starter Squid in white wine, garlic, arugula and pine nuts was excellent. The arugula salads had olive oil, pine nuts, and a generous supply of shaved high quality parmesan. My friends had a generous portion of Gray Tile Fish and I had sautéed Soft Shell Crabs in olive oil, pepper, and garlic. The food was well prepared, seasoned, and hot. Mine came with wonderful pasta and marinara sauce. My friends had the garlic and oil which they said was excellent. We finished with tiramisu which was dense and flavorful. They used quality mascarpone cheese and didn’t cut it with whipped cream. The cocoa powder was thick and had a bite.
The waiter service to our table seemed a bit patchy, but not bad. A little more attention would have been nice. The extra help was solid and made up for some mistakes by circling back on the waiter. I kept hoping for pepper grinder over the salt and pepper shakers on the table. In general the kitchen is kicking out some 5+ start food and staff will not dump it in your lap. Considering the prices, the food is bargain. I’d go back in more often if I lived nearby. It is definitely worth the trip even it is just to say “you’d never imagine what a great restaurant I found behind broom and dust pan in Richmond.”
Pros: Reasonable prices and excellent food
Cons: Little noisy and staff is variable

Been going to Dots for quite a few years and love the breakfast but the people there are the best. They always make you feel welcome and comfortable. On a cold snowy/rainy day....you can't beat the Yankee Bean soup to warm you up.
Cookie and her staff are the best around.
Pros: good music, great food, great staff
Cons: parking at times

For example, I tried another Chinese restaurant down the street the other day. As I was eating their version of Chicken Cashew, I kept wondering why I didn't just eat at my favorite spot Jiang's?
Their prices, ambience, quality of food, and service, is really the best. The atmosphere is updated and modern but still has a coziness to it.
I eat out a lot for work and pleasure, and Jiang's is really a sure bet for Chinese food in Richmond.

Savory Tikka Masala and wonderful Samosas. Service is quick and friendly. The quality is noticeably better than other Indian restaurants I've tried. I used to go to India Garden and Grill, but they closed down. Ruchee turned out to be way better. They are who I turn to for great indian food. They have a Ruchee Express downtown also, on Main street near VCU. They are equally satisfying and friendly. Very recommended.
Pros: Best Tikka Masala

Best food around and my all time favorite resturant.only disadvantage is that Outback (anywhere) does not take names for smoking tables. You have to just grab a seat when someone gets up. I always feel like a waiting vulture. Then you wait 45 minutes and someone else walks up and takes your table before you can get to it. Why can they not do the same for non smoking sections. Take a name? Also, they do not have call ahead seating or reservations. We live an hour away then when we get there we wait another hour to grab a seat.
Pros: great food, great prices
Cons: smoking arrangements, get own seat in smoki, dont take reservation

I have been going to this establishment for a few years now. Yes it may be a little run down, but hell, it's Richmond- what place isn't run down in the Fan/Carytown area? The service is great. Maybe if rude people who don't know how to tip wouldn't push their way to the front of the bar line the servers would have an easier job. The food is pretty good during the day, it's mostly Southern fare, at night it's the usually bar food. If you like fun, I would reccoment this place.
Pros: service, drinks, price, vollyball court in back, dance floor
Cons: it can be very crowded sometimes

This place by far has the best lager beer in all of RIchmond. It's a bit hard to find if you are not familiar with the city, but well worth the effort. Is there anything more enjoyable then enjoying a cold brew out on the deck overlooking the city?
