Fairwood Library is part of the King County Library system and has books, a good career section, tapes, dvds, computers and more. Their offerings are available through the internet at http://www.kcls.org . You need to get a library card to check out items. Their career section is often my first target with course listings for many of the area colleges, good references for how to find a job, and some job listings. The computers are in high demand via signup sheets. They have many community programs including tax help, english as a second language etc. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. Huge section of children's books.

It is right near a park and built over the river. You can definitely make an afternoon of this. Pack a lunch and eat at the picnic tables. The library itself is very well stocked and the staff are all polite and helpful. Plenty of parking. They have story time and special events you should also look into. The train goes right past and my son always gets a kick out of that.

My favorite places to access the Cedar River walking trail are at Cedar River Park, Renton Library, Renton Senior center, and Renton Stadium. The trail stretches for more than 5 miles and follows the Cedar river which is a great place to see birds, watch the salmon runs, catch boating views on Lake Washington, and watch small airplane take offs and landings. Even the views of Boeing are of some interest. I've spotted many mergansers, kingfisher, grebes, many duck species, great blue heron, little green heron among others. Cherry trees bloom in spring. Many picnic facilities, river access for small boats and inner tubes.

This park is easy to get to from I-405, just one block west of Exit 5. There is a lot of parking but it often fills up early. Same for the parking near Ivars/Kidd Valley. I've never seen the boat launch parking to fill up. Has a short trail that will soon connect up to the Cedar River trail, a small island with nesting birds, lots of play facilities -- vollyball, horseshoe, tennis, playground for children. Its a good place to find birds and sea gulls and also a nutria. Its home to Clam lights at Christmas. The native plantings smell wonderful at times -- my favorites are the roses and the honeysuckle privet which they convinced me to plant in my yard. Great views of Mount Rainier up the trail and good sunsets over the Olympics.

This is the place to go to see great blue herons and other birds. The area is under governance by King County Metro due to the sewage treatment facility. They've done a nice job of turning the post treatment ponds into a lovely stroll with native plant life restoring the water purity. The trail loops around the dam on the black river which was pulled out of the pipes when Boeing put in their headquarters and goes past the treatment ponds and back over onto Boeing property with their native plantings. See all sorts of winter ducks and unusuals.

This park is dominated by the baseball field but has several swing sets and tennis courts. Getting to the park is not easy -- get a map since access is via a country road. Down the road is a huge electrical relay station that is interesting and many blackberry bushes line the road. Also, their are trails running down the power lines that are a favorite of mountain bikers. The views are of Renton, Seattle, Bellevue, Lake Washington and the Olympics, but you have to hike down the road a bit -- the road is blocked at top to limit through traffic.
