Pullen Park, located next to North Carolina State University's campus, is an excellent location for family outings. The park has an actual working train that travels the property and can accommodate children and parents alike. The carousel is old-fashioned and still runs. The park has boats, swing sets and play equipment for toddlers and older children.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are from camping out in umstead park. My girl scout troop wuld go on a bi-monthly basis camping in this park. its always a good time, and deep enough in the wood, and far enough away from the city taht you feel like you're really out in nature. They have some awesome trails to navigate...Its a greatway to get out in nature, whether you spend the day or spend the night.

I used to volunteer in the paleo lab and the fact that they had a paleo lab is indicative of the hands on approach that this museum takes. They have a great permanent exhibit in dinos, all kinds of animals and plants. But do not miss the special exhibits from time to time. I know they charge admission for those, but they are always worth the price. I was there for the Deep Sea and Space Exploration exhibits.
Also, do not be shy about volunteering for the museum.

This is the biggest library in the raleigh area (excluding college libraries of course) I have had a fantastic time here since it opened. it just looks like a serious library (because it is). They have several different levels, as well as computers for internet access, and tons of refrence materials. The library is a great pace in my opinion to take a break from the rest of the world and relax. i highly reccommend making a visit, you'll be impressed.

More
Millbrook Exchange Park opened an outstanding off-leash dog park in the past year. There is a large fenced in area for big dogs that has plenty of shaded areas with mulch and there is a good sized area for smaller dogs. In between the two is a picnic area with shade with entrances leading to either side. There are doggie waste bags everywhere and their presence seems to work in encouraging people to clean up behind their dogs. Recently a water main was installed so the dogs have constant access to water. It is open from sunrise until the park lights are turned off at night. Not only is it a great place for dogs to socialize and play, the people there are more than happy to have a conversation with newcomers.

The greenway is a great way to spend the afternoon. The greenway goes literally all over town, you can travel through town and through the woods by bike, rollerblades or by foot. You can see lakes, creeks and everything in between while travelling on the well parked paved trail. I love the greenway, it is a great way to have an organized trip through nature.

Baileywick Park is such a wonderful place for kids to play and really enjoy themselves! The playground is always clean and in great condition. There is ample parking, and close to the playground so you won't have to drag your little ones too far. There is even a little pavillion with picnic tables that you can eat at when you need a break from all the playing that will be happening! I come here often and am often asked to bring children here as a babysitter!
