Farmers market is a great place to get fresh vegatables. However this year they have jacked up the price of tomatoes to $2. a pound. I noticed that a lot of people are not buying. Good. There are some booths that have them for a $1.50 pound. The tomatoes don't seem to have a nice taste this year. If you want a real bargain on fresh fruit and vegtables go to the drive in building at the rear where wholesalers sell in crate lots. Customers then take them to the tables and break them down to shares. You can get good deals this way

The State Farmers' Market, located off Lake Wheeler Road (close to Hillsborough Street) in Raleigh, has a very good selection of local produce, flowers, herbs and meat. The only drawback is that there is no organic produce at the market. All produce is sprayed with chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc.). The State Farmers' Market offers a great selection of inexpensive plants, so if you're looking to start a garden this summer, make the Farmers' Market your first stop. Also offers inexpensive freshly cut, beautiful flowers. Much cheaper than buying flowers from a florist.

I love bringing out of town guests to the charming State Farmers Market. The segmented, open-air shops provide the freshest local goods you could ever want. I actually purchased a decent amount of Christmas gifts from some of the shops too.
The restaurant is also very good and reasonably priced. You cant go wrong spending an afternoon here.

The Raleigh Farmers Market is worth the drive it takes to get there from some areas. It supports the local economy and the selections are endless. They have all the normal fruits and vegetables, but they also feature an onsite restaurant that uses all local products in the foods. It is a huge farmers market and it's easy to spend half a day taking it all in.
PROS: Supports local farmers and high quality products
CONS: Far drive from most of the area
