Upon hearing about the selection of books from some reviewers, I brought my parents who were visiting from Singapore, only to have them accused by a female store staff of mis-positioning their books (in fact it was someone else before us who had misplaced the books), and by another male staff at checkout who couldn't wait to shoo them off after they have paid for 5 books. I feel certain after these 2 incidents that they serve a certain clientele of Caucasian appearance only. It was a sad day for us as my parents were seriously looking to buy books for their grandchild, only to be treated so shabbily.
Pros: Wide Selection of books
Cons: Shabby treatment for non-caucasians

I now live in Atlanta but still order almost all of my books from this fabulous store. Any time I come to Raleigh, I see my family and then run off to QRB. I value the recommendations that the staff provide; NEVER before have I come across such a well-read and intelligent staff and the selections of books at this store is the best I know of. Long live Quail Ridge Books!!!

I wish I could give more than five stars to Quail Ridge Books. It's a fine store, offering splendid service (personalized, especially when you're hunting for something not easy to find) and a very wide selection of books. But it's more than a store; it has become a center for our community, and often builds community through programs that go beyond the expected author visits. Panels and symposiums on important topics of the day feature knowledgeable community leaders. The staff welcomes you each time you enter as if you're a long-lost relative! I take out-of-town visitors to Quail Ridge the way I would take them to the NC Museum of Art or to Umstead Park; it's one of the finest features of our region. Quail Ridge is one of Raleigh's most valuable treasures!

This is one of the finest bookstores in the U.S.. I grew up in bookstores, I've worked in bookstores, but nowhere, ever, have I met such an enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff. There is no question they won't answer, no book they won't knock themselves out helping you find. Nancy and Jim Olson are passionate, brilliant booksellers who care deeply about good reading and music, and they have a fantastic, warm, always welcoming group of colleagues working with them. Everyone who works there is a discriminating reader and very responsive to customers' particular interests. Quail Ridge Books and Music is one of the treasures of Raleigh and N.C. We are so fortunate to have them in our community.

In all Raleigh, there is no place I'd rather visit than Quail Ridge Books. I always feel welcome, in person or on the phone. The staff is always unobtrusively obliging, pleasant and immensely informed. And the in-store author and other events are always worthwhile.
I just don't know how QRB could be any better. I love it dearly.

This is the best bookstore I have ever visited and I've visited bookstores all over the world. Sara is one of the best managers - I've worked with her years ago and never once heard her mistreat anyone. I've never experienced anyone stalking me in this store or following me around asking me if I need help.
You couldn't be any more wrong about your review of this store. It is my favorite and I've spent many hours in it. I've never found the prices to be different here than any other place that sells books including grocery stores. I recommend Quail Ridge Books all the time and will continue to do so.

All I can think is that those 2 negative reviews must have been written either by chain store investors who see their stock quotes falling or by one of the shoplifters who have been asked not to return. What a totally false picture of one of the best stores in the Triangle in ANY category. The sales staff are courteous and usually say, Let me know if I can help you find something before leaving browsers alone. And to attack the manager, one of the nicest, most professional women in the world? Unbelievable. Can't help wondering what store those two nay-sayers were actually in. QRB dark and musty? Oh please.

As the author of 16 published novels, I have signed books and bought books all over the country for the past 18 years. Quail Ridge Books is in a class by itself. The staff's knowledge of books and publishing, their emphasis on community service, and their genuine love of music and the written word is unparalelled. Although I live in Atlanta, whenever I travel to or through Raleigh, QRB is always a must-stop. I only wish Atlanta had a store half as good as QRB.

It has come to my attention the Quail Ridge has gotten a critical review. If that is worthy of note it is only because it is may be a first. For 30 years and from one location to another we have followed Nancy and Jim Olson and their band of merry booksellers faithfully. We did so not out of affection, though great affection we have come to feel, but rather because this is an exceptional store populated with a collection of unexpected books and staffed by very well-read folks whose knowledge of books is vast and whose love of reading equals or exceeds our own. Having travelled far and wide, we have never encountered another store that was the equal of Quail Ridge. FG and CG

As a recent transplant to the Triangle I just had to express my eternal gratitude for this gem of a bookstore in Raleigh. Run by charming local owners Nancy and Jim Olson, super manager Sarah and a dedicated staff of true readers, Quail Ridge is an oasis of culture, near-nightly and world-class author events, book clubs for every reader's taste, the most beautiful greeting cards I've found anywhere in North Carolina, and amusing book related gifts. Their children's section is a dream, with experts like a former children's librarian available to recommend appropriate books for all ages.
Staff members have spent hours with me chasing down books for my own exotic needs and gifts for my loved ones.
Whenever I'm homesick for Los Angeles or San Francisco, I head straight for the Quail.
Just wanted to say thanks to a most excellent and loved store.
