I love this independent bookstore! They are the premier place in Raleigh for author readings and book signings. Their selection is excellent. They even carry imported British mysteries and Dover thrift classics (so you can pick up school reading quite cheap!). The selection of reading-related gifts is nice. The staff is very helpful and willing to help track down a book you're interested in. The selection of local authors is very strong. They often have more than one edition of a book available, great if you're looking for a nice hardback edition of a classic or a paperback just for a course.
The children's book selection is very nice; I am particularly impressed with the large variety of board books (including the GIANT board books), bathtub books, and foreign-language children's books.

Stevens is a great used bookstore that has books from floor to ceiling. the problem being that it has books...from floor to ceiling...in stacks. these stacks can make it difficult to find the boko you are lokoing for, or get down the aisle where that book migth potentially be located. You can often find lots of treasures used book wise at Stevens however. i really enjoy shopping here.

I ama huge fan of used bookstores in general. What I like about readers corner is taht they ahve a large amount of inventory outside, 24 hours a day. So if its 2am, and your looking for a new book you can go make a purchase. They arn't the best books in teh world, but its still nice to know that they are there for you when you need them.

At Ed Mckay used books, you can find just about anything! The not only sell books, but cds, dvds, and video games. I have had such good luck finding all sorts of things. My son enjoys picking out used books to add to his collection. We have picked up Thomas the train books, Barney, Little People, Dr. Seuss and the like for barely anything at all. They have everything put into sections that is easy to find. If you are looking for one of Dr. Phil's many books, they have a section devoted to him. They even have an audio section for people who like books on tape. I can't say enough about this used bookstore!

THE best place to find out-of-print books and music, vintage postcards, cookbooks, and children's books. And the endcaps are not to be missed: plastered with all the pictures, news clippings, cartoons, receipts, etc. that have been found in the books over the years. The staff are warm and accommodating. Located fairly close to I-40 and the Beltline and well worth the short detour.

Don't listen to the previous reviewer. His review is based on his apparent inherent skittishness, nonexistent tolerance of basic store etiquette and thinly veiled accusations of racism. Most, if not all, comic shops have a no-free-reading policy; they'll let you try a comic out, but how are they going to make money if they let you read it for free? And the $5 minimum for card purchases is practically universal: if the purchase is making them less money than they're paying for the fee to use the credit system, they're LOSING money.
In truth, Capital Comics is a great store. I've been on or around campus for years, and I've lived in the Raleigh area and have been traveling to Capital Comics since I was a kid. The owner is incredibly nice, as are most of the staff. There is always the employee that rubs you the wrong way, a fact true for all retail stores, but by and large the staff is helpful (as in, actually asking if they can help you) and friendly. I actually frequent a number of comic book shops, and Capital always has the most shelf copies of every book. Their collection of trades is top-notch; off-hand, I cannot think of a single time I've ever had to ask them to order something that wasn't a big-ticket item.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of Capital Comics is that they are a COMIC SHOP. They treat their comics well (read: they put BOARDS in the BAGS, unlike Foundation's Edge) and they deal primarily, and almost exclusively, in comics and directly comics-related merchandise (i.e. T-shirts, a few toys, trading cards and posters). They don't waste space with table-top gaming, obscure movies or all the random stuff Foundation's Edge throws on their shelves. Every inch of the store is covered in back issues and trades. Back issues are never marked up to capitalize on sensationalism (i.e. Captain America #25). Capital Comics is a store for COMIC fans looking for an actual COMIC shop.
I cannot recommend Capital Comics, or its sister store, enough.
Pros: Great selection, great prices, great staff
Cons: Slightly cramped space, accessing the side-street where you park is inconvenient
