I can't tell enough people about how good the food is at The Old Canteen...I have never had a bad experience. It's a simple process...walk in ask for a bottle of La Crema (pinot nior) get the calamari as an app., then anything off the menu will do. They are fast, courteous, and very helpful. Honestly if you need help with the wine...go to the bar, or read a book...or better yet pay $80+ a plate and see the sommelier...Sal and his group are a wonderful experience.
Pros: incredible calamari
Cons: can't find one problem

Authentic Mexican cuisine is the actual description for Don Jose Tequilas. The food is great, the staff is super nice. It is the place to go with friends, family or partner. And let's not forget, it is the place to be on Cinco De Mayo. My friends and I go every year and we enjoyed it like it's our first time.
Pros: Best Strawberry Margaritas
Cons: none

More
A small, old-school Italian restaurant in historic Federal Hill, the Old Canteen is a place for delicious food and pleasant ambiance at low prices. The Prix-Fix menu, for just a dollar or two more than the regular entrees, includes bread and butter, soup, salad or antipasto, your entee with a side dish, and dessert and coffee. The menu has a variety of chicken, veal, steak, seafood and pasta offerings. This is not a place for a quick meal, but one where dinner is to be savored with friends over the course of an evening. Expect to spend at least two hours here, but not because of poor service. The wait staff is intent on letting you enjoy your meal one course at a time.

A combination of excellent cuisine, good service, and a unique atmosphere make Mediterraneo a top notch restaurant. Mediterraneo's second floor is perhaps the best spot in Providence for a luncheon or a romantic evening. It is hard pressed to find a better dining experience anywhere. The only negative input I have is perhaps a little too much service, but that is to be expected on the Hill.

I went here for a lunch with co-workers and our employers (8 of us). It took a strange-ly long time for them to get our food out to us but the food was really interesting. I had portebello mushroom and pepperjack melt with black beans, onions, and sweet potato spread for $6.25. An unusual combination but it really worked and was yummy. There are a lot of veggie choices and I had trouble deciding between what I got and the sweet potato and swiss melt with grilled onions, squash, tomato and spinach. Two of the people with me got it though and both said it was quite tasty though not as sweet potato-y as they would expect from something called a sweet potato melt. I got fries too and they weren't really that great--too large and non deep fried crispy for me. Plus the ketchup was weird homemade ketchup or something. Kinda runny and sweet and cinnamony. We were like, 'can we get some Heinz?' One of the people got avocado soup which came out looking really really brilliantly green and in a martini glass. The decor is really trendy - cute - punk - hip too. I want to go back for dinner--the "Granola-encrusted tofu over coffee-pear rice and spicy yogurt sauce" on their menu is enormously appealing.

The best Fusili ala Vodka I've ever had!!! They've also got world-class service and great seating by the open floor-to-ceiling windows. Especially nice in the summer when you can go for a short after-dinner walk to the little piazza with the fountain on Atwells.

Instead of going to another restaurant my brother suggested Gregg's, one of four like it in the state. He and my mother had been there before and liked it. Normal standard fare they said. On the internet, the reviews were mixed but more people liked it then not so we went. There were their famous sliced cucumbers were okay and the rolls were fine nothing to write home about. The area is spacious and it was not noisy at all. Appetizers chicken quesadilla was very good with guacamole, bits of tomatoes and sour cream side for sides. Crisp, enough chicken and the taste was quite good. Their orange sweet potato crinkle fries were excellent and fried just right. Chipotle like dipping sauce with it was excellent. The buffalo sauce was too vinegary. My main dish (and nephew's) was the Philly cheese-steak (a la RI) sandwich on a kaiser. It was very good with tasty grilled beef strips with some onions and little bits of cheese (some would more but I liked it with this little bit of cheese) . My mother's broiled (non breaded) scrod was excellent broiled just right. My sister-in-law liked her Chinese chicken salad. My brother liked his burger. The restaurant makes their own desserts. The chocolate cake with pudding like filling in it was chocolate and excellent. The waitress was very good, helpful in deciding on certain entrees etc and served us well and was gracious in all ways. She helped us (me mostly) decide on which items might be good to try. Reasonably priced, good tasting food, many items to choose from (the new menu), I would rate it as a good place to go for lunch or dinner .
