The Cantina is a favorite hangout and dining destination among the college crowds in Potsdam NY. This restaurant/bar is often bustling with students at happy hours and dinner time. They have excellent margaritas that they serve by the pitcher or glass. During happy hour, pitchers are only $8! Great deal. The food here is pretty good- tex-mex with good preparation techniques. The service can be very hit or miss- expect to be waited on by a college student who is either very nice or very snotty. The salsa is the best you will find anywhere around here!

Due to the SEVERE lack of competition, Maxfields gets the distinction of being the best bar in town hands-down. Here they have a nice bar with excellently kept sitting and dining area. They also have a nice outdoor patio so patrons could dine or drink overlooking the Racquette River in warmer months. The service here is nice, but they are mostly area students so lack the quality of real professionalism. This is an extremely popular place among the college crowd and they tend not to let the underage drinkers in so it still has an air of sophistication. They have an excellent lunch and dinner menu which is perfect for out-of-town parents or locals on special occassions. The menu is not very student oriented as far as pricing is concerned.

This place has great food, and the best margaritas you can ask for. The prices are cheaper than most eateries in the area. I wouldn't hesitate to stop in for dinner the next time I'm in town.

I like Maxfield's. It's clean and the staff is professional. The primary drawback is access. This is not a restaurant to take someone in a wheelchair to. You must go up some stairs to the main dining level. Also, you must go downstairs into the basement for bathrooms.
The menu is interesting if not expansive, and a rarity in Potsdam, summer outdoor seating.
