One thing I always look forward to at this store is all the free samples. Somewhere between 15 and 30 jams, jellies, relishes, and other assorted products are usually available to sample. Last time I was there, they had Belgian waffles with blueberry syrup to try. Almost all of the food is great. Most of the jams etc are between 6 nad 8 dollars per jar, and can be put into an attractive box or basket and make a great gift. Most of the products are made from New England produce, and all can be ordered from their website in case you want more and can't get to the store. If the prices dropped fifteen to twenty percent, it would get a full five stars.

Brand new to Portsmouth from NYC I have say Sake's sushi does not fall short of restauarants in New York City. Fresh Sushi, huge maki list, and most of all they have authentic japanese Shabu Shabu, for those of you know what this just go try it. Some wait staff may not be able to communicate english as well as you like but they get the job done. Charming, friendly place do try it if you are ever in town.
Pros: fresh sushi, huge selections of rolls
Cons: metered parking lot

I think a couple of the reviews below are shills for the competition. I have been going to The Toast for 10 yrs or so. I have taken 50 to 60 guests there as well, ranging from college students to business associates to elderly parents. The results are always the same - repeat customers. A friend comes up from NY for the weekend, and he'll want to eat there 3 times. A business associate from Boston, every time he comes to town for lunch. My wife's friends from across the country - every visit. Keep in mind this is a town with over 50 restaurants, and it still gets that draw. The FT will make you anything you want if they have the ingredients - there is no Monte Cristo on the menu and they did not know how to make one... but when I told them, they produced the best Monte I've ever had. I'm not sure I've had a bad meal there. Yes, the waiters have tattoos and piercing. BFD, I don't, and they are not forcing me to get any. Yes, sometimes they have attitude, but that is a peculiar part of the charm. I go there in a suit a lot; the first few times I had a feeling that they almost didn't want to serve me... but they've gotten over that. The kitchen is clean, from what I understand they pass their health inspections with flying colors every time, and the owner is frequently cooking. If you don't believe me, google the Phantom Gourmet's review. It's not a fine dining experience, but for the best eclectic diner-type of experience, you should check it out.

Great location, some good menu choices, but not the friendliest staff. Right in the middle of downtown Portsmouth, this coffee shop has a great location for people watching. It also has a wireless access point if you would like to sit at a table either inside or outside the cafe while you sip your latte and get some work on the laptop done. Perfect place to bring a springtime date for a nice chat.

I LOVE THIS BAR!!! The Gaslight offers a great atmosphere with no hassle. They have: game night on Mondays, Dancing on Friday and Saturdays (the only place in town by the way) and they offer pizza downstairs and great fine dining food on the street level. The staff is friendly and knows how to make just about every drink known to man but they have zero tolerance for rude and offensive behavior so if you want to be a [******] go to DStreet.
(They DONOT however serve shots which is a draw back but again not many places do anymore in Portsmouth.)

My husband and I heard this was a wonderful place and traveled from Cape Cod for an anniversary week end to Portsmouth. Upon our arrival we were greeting in a friendly manner and seated in a nice booth. Our wonderful waitress (Ann, we just loved her) never missed a beat. We did not have to ask for one thing. The food was the best I believe I have ever had. When we got our bill we were very pleased that all of that wonderful experience was very reasonable. We talked with the owner on the way out and let him know how impressed we were. Would highly recommend this to anyone and request Ann for your waitress.
Pros: Best service and food ever
Cons: couldn't find one

Very suprised by the other ratings, I've been to restaurants in Boston, New York, L.A., and Miami, and this restaurant tops them all. We tried three different appetizers (lobster roll, crab salad, dinner salad), and three main courses which were all excellent! Plus the desserts were to die for! Service very attentive and knowledgable on the dishes. I highly recommend this restaurant, whether its a romantic dinner for two, or trying to impress a boss, bring them here. I promise you won't regret it.
Pros: EVERYTHING!!
