I really love the atmosphere and the food, but apart from a few of their wait staff, the majority of their room service is seriously wanting. It's hard to imagine that in this economy it's hard to have a waitress that ignores a table for 15 mins or so on a mid-week night. I think after two really wanting nights at Lucca in 2 weeks, it's time for the owners to seriously review their service operations (note - it may not be the wait staff, but how they run the store) because poor service will drive us (and others) to other restaurants.
OWNERS - PLEASE fix this problem, I really want to love your place, but at this rate, I'm going to stop coming and take my time, money, and stomach elsewhere (like RSB, where I actually get service); you need to spend time training and reinforcing the performance of your floor service staff.
Pros: Great food
Cons: Service is sophomoric, wait staff is not on their game

I ate at Lucca last night with a group of people and it was delicious! We had not eaten here before, our fellow diners have and they love it. I see why. The food was excellent, and the service was even better. We had an antipasto platter to start and salmon for dinner. Both of these dishes are not something I would normally order, but Dena, our waitress, described the food in such a descriptive and delicious way, my mouth was watering with every word she said, and I couldn't help but go with her recommendations. She was so pleasant, smiling, attentive and had a great sense of humour. she made a wonderful impression and completely changed the mood of one of our crabby friends dining with us. And the food was delicious! The salmon, King I think, was tender, moist and full of fresh flavor. It had fresh vegetables and an olive sauce that I've never had the likes of before! Dena said that the chef is a woman from San Francisco and she spoke of her as though she was as impressed with her cooking as we were. How refreshing to be served such great food by a person who obviously takes pride in the food she serves. I will be back! I should mention that ALL the service we received, from the girl who seated us to the man who refilled our waters, was very friendly. The people who work here obviously like their jobs and take great pride. Bravo!
Pros: The service

My wife and I have eaten here a few times and it's been consistently pretty good. We enjoy going for brunch, the scones are always very flavorful, the bacon and egg pizza is a favorite, good bloody marys. The service staff during brunch is very friendly and helpful, although this past weekend was different. It started out fine, we were seated by the nice gal who took our orders. As she was getting our coffees, the busboy came over and asked if we had any questions. The kid was unshaven and reeked of a what I can only presume was a fun July 4th with a lot of drinking. As the brother of a recovering alcoholic, I immediately recognized the odor. We told him we didn't have any questions, thanks. Our server brought our coffees, then politely excused herself to seat another table. The busboy came over again to ask if we had questions. I remarked that we did not, but we could make one up if that would make him feel better. The server came over again and gently led him away, coming back to take our order. Neither us nor the server said a word about the busboy, but I think both parties were uncomfortable with the obvious situation. A while later as my wife and I ate our meals, we saw the busboy behind the bar pouring liquor into a paper cup with a lid and drinking it on the way back to the kitchen. We felt bad for our server, she was really nice, and we wondered if this is the way she has to work every weekend.
Pros: Great food and service
Cons: People working drunk?

The word on the street is that the chef is relatively new, and she has her hair done at Arabella's, by Steven....with that aside....my wife and I were in town for a visit, and we had not place to go for Valentines Day. We made some contacts and were graciously allowed to "squeeze in" for the big day......antipasti, "breakfast," a couple of pizza's with a range free egg cooked in the middle for "dipping," and beef and pork that melted in our mouths......this is the best kept secret in Portland, and I imagine that the next time we stop by Portland on Valentine's Day unannounced we will not be so lucky to be squeezed in.......Lissa is one rockin chef, and she obviously has an outstanding crew.....try it....you will love it....PS: $$ for wine, and all that food for 4!!!
Pros: Flavor, Flavor, Flavor
Cons: Not enough time to try all of it!!!!!!

I wandered into Lucca with a girlfriend one night and was pleasantly surprised by the experience we had there. We ordered drinks (the fancy nancy is great) and pizzas (margherita and salsice), and enjoyed watching the hot pizza cook with the dark curls toss our dough!! The service was great, the food even better, and the view (wink wink) was the best! Luckily, Lucca is a short drive from my house so I will be back!
Pros: interior design, good looking cooks, location, perfect pizza
Cons: drinks are a little expensive

I recently visited Lucca on a sunny day and really enjoyed my experience. Our entire experience was fantastic. It is rare to receive as good as service as we did from our server that day. I wish I would have taken down our server's name, because she was so attentive and friendly. Our food was great too. We started with the "simply greens" salad and had two pizzas (Margherita and an Arrabbiatta with sausage) both suggested by our server. All of the items were delicious. The food was so good, I decided to order dessert, which is something I rarely do. We had the profitoroles, which was an amazing concoction of toffee, ice cream, and sea salts. I highly recommend this neighborhood gem.
Pros: Pizza, wine, and dessert

Lucca is only a 15-minute walk from my house, but it's taken me a few months to try it. Went there because a good friend suggested it. I am SO glad she prompted me to go--it's my new favorite Italian place in town (I've been missing Assagio dreadfully!). Our server was incredibly pleasant and very well informed--she made a great wine suggestion based on what I told her I was looking for. I had an appetizer that was the special of the day--figs wrapped in prosciutto with goat-cheese crustini. It came with some lightly dressed arugula in the center and it was DIVINE! Light and sparkling flavors, high-quality ingredients, paired with a deft, light touch. Then had the pasta with pesto, green beans, and potato dish. I had had exact same dish many years ago at one of the top restaurants in San Fran, but that dish disappointed greatly. Not Lucca's version--it was fantastic! Best pesto I've had in Portland. Portion could have been a bit bigger, but I'm a hungry runner, so eat more than most. Ended meal with delicious, generous profiteroles with caramel gelato in them. I"m still drooling thinking about entire menu. This location seems to be cursed, but i hope Lucca thrives and survives! A+!
Pros: Innovative takes on classic Italian; atmosphere; service; selection; accepts reservations
Cons: slightly small portions of entree pastas

We were not impressed with Lucca. The staff was rude. My expensive drink was spilled in the bread basket as it was set on the table but the server did not apologize or clean it up. We were seated next to the noisy bar. The food was bland. We had to wait and wait for service and finally had to track down our server to pay. We won't be going back.
Pros: Good neighbor location
Cons: Terrible service, bland food, loud
