Several years ago I received poor service at the Bagdad, so I decided to spend my money elsewhere. However, they were the only theater playing the movie my boyfriend wanted to see, so I caved. I was pleasantly suprised to receive such great service! My waitress was very sweet, efficient, and knowledgeable about the food/ beer selection, and even told us interesting tidbits about the history of the theater. She recommended the chicken enchiladas, which were delicious! Every time our beers were low, she made sure we had a new round before our old glassed were empty. She also made a killer Spanish coffee for dessert. She offered to put our movie tickets on our tab, and made sure we were all cashed out in time to get in to the movie. We tipped her considerably well- and she deserved it! Before we left, my boyfriend told her that it was the best service we had received at McMenamins. She explained that there was a "weeding out" of the bad servers, as well as a new training program that is helping to change their reputation. It must be working! We highly recommend the Bagdad to anyone.
Pros: great service, beautiful place, great beer.

Great price for a friend membership you can go with 2 guests and the whole family all year long, for the price of 2 movies for a family of 4 without the popcorn and other goodies.
Great investment in your family, for little cash.
I also disagree strongly that this place is not for adults. This is a great place to catch a Imax movie or laser light show, as well as, spend time learning interesting information on a vast array of topics.
Money and time well spent for the whole family!!!

We all know there's been "Winter Storm 2004" but the theatre management seems to want to prolong the experience by not using the heat. Clinton Street theatre is hip and independent, the movies are great, but the price is not that low ($6, versus $3 at Bagdad & Laurelhurst), and the sound and seat are way below the norm. After 3 hours of sitting in a frigid theatre watching Scarface on 1/12/04 I'm going to rethink hitting this theatre unless I'm willing to risk

Enjoy a step back to the past with this place without losing a good movie view experience!
This is an example of one of the few older theaters in the Portland area that remains running some first run films. Their prices are less expensive than the cineplex folks, seats are more comfortable (cushy), and it has that old theater ambiance.
They have update the sound system to Dolby Digital, and have updated their projection equipment as well -- so the movie experience should be as good (although not THX) as in most cineplex theaters.
Here's another thought -- by going here you will be supporting a local business instead of one of the faceless conglomerate corporations that just take the profits out of the area.

What an amazing idea to convert an old elementary school into a restaurant/hotel/bar/movie theater/banquet hall. The idea was phenomenal and the implementation is superb. This place is really neat. It has an intimate feeling despite it's size. Great place for people of all ages!

This is THE place to go on a rainy day.
I go here all the time to see movies. They are usually the first to show them of the 2nd run theaters and you can see them for a couple of bucks. Popcorn and sodas are cheaper here than Regal or the other big theaters.
Your hubby doesn't want to see the second chick-flick feature? There's also 3 major game rooms AND big screen sporting events running most of the time.
The only draw back here is the noise in the game rooms...so I usually tuck a pair of noise-reducing earplugs in my pocket, find my favorite game and block the world out.

McMenamins are just great places to go and chill. Very interesting location with all kinds of history. The soaking pools are ok if you're into that, personally, I go for the cheap movies where you can have a beer (I suggest Rubinator) and some grub. Good stuff! Check it out!!

Sister theater to the Bagdad located across the river, the Mission straddles the area between the NW district and the Pearl district. Originally intended as an evangelical mission, in later years it became a theater and then a theater/pub, mainly catering to cult films, art films, and the like.Typical pub fare and beer/wine can be enjoyed during the show as well.

Ever used to dream of cracking open a beer in class? Maybe just pulling out a hamburger and fries while you listened to the teacher lecture… Even if you were the smiling apple in school, there is something intriguing about drinking and eating at your local schoolhouse. You will find this experience in force at McMenamins’ Kennedy School.
Once again the brothers have done an outstanding job of transforming an old building into something truly unique. Tour the halls of paintings, stay the night in the remodeled classrooms, watch a movie in the gym… what ever your pleasure, you can find it here.
