Historic hotels sometimes get a bad rap--but sometimes, they're the perfect elegant antidote to a hundred identical chain hotels. The Benson has old-world style with all the modern conveniences. You'll feel that you stepped back in time from the moment you walk in the door.
The Benson is a popular meeting place because of its wonderful palatial lobby. With comfortable chairs, beautiful rugs, warm fireplaces, and attentive service, you'll feel pampered just by taking a seat.
The service at check-in is excellent. I'd recommend asking for a corner room; it's worth it to have the extra space. The rooms are lovely, well-kept and up-to-date. You'll definitely enjoy your stay.
If you have time, the London Grill downstairs is well worth a visit. The meals are excellent, and it's a beautiful place to celebrate any occasion. If you want old-school style, with Caesar salad and flambes done tableside, you'll enjoy it. Again, service is amazing. Live piano most evenings really adds to the ambiance.
Classic style with modern convenience; I love, love, love the Benson!

The Benson is an historic hotel in downtown Portland. Beautiful lobby and rooms, impeccable service, and fine dining and shopping all around you in the downtown Portland area. I love their afternoon tea! I've stayed there several times for weekend visits to Portland and have gotten very good (around $100/night) rates for weekend nights. Definitely worth staying here!

I've stayed here a couple of times, for both business and pleasure. It is the nicest hotel I've stayed at in Portland. The rooms are big and no detail has been overlooked; there's marble and gold fixtures everywhere. Recently, I stayed in a room with a flat-panel TV screen and free WiFi Internet (I'm big on the free fast Internet access). The bed was huge and very comfortable, and the staff very attentive. Pets are welcome and they have a "pet spa" type thing. The best steakhouse in Portland, El Gaucho, is inside the hotel and guests can often get tables when regular folks cannot.
